Smile My car is finally running after over 4 years of being down!!

We’ll it’s alive! For those of you who don’t remember. I started my project on my project back in May ‘04. I had the $4 coolant hose above the filler neck pop on my 12k mile fresh motor. It ended up overheating, leaked coolant into the CC chamber and ended up blowing out an o-ring along with breaking the center iron o-ring channel.
I decided to build out a sweet single turbo motor but this time do it myself. I actually got it all back together and started the motor about 2.5 years ago but I had huge issues with fuel overdose using 850/1680cc injectors so the car would start but but would stall if I did any sudden throttle movements. No matter what I did I couldn’t tune out enough fuel to make the 850’s run. So that car sat, and sat, and sat some more. I went through a move from L.A. to Minden, NV where the car sat in my shop for over two years.
After going to a local SCCA event with a friend with an STi a few weeks ago I got the bug to finally devote time to this longstanding project. After about 10 hours of troubleshooting, replacing a TPS, adding resistors to the 1680cc injectors, double checking everything, I finally decided to just dump the 850 primaries and go back to the stock 550s. Turns out that was the trick! Using a better map for start up off the FCEdit forum I got the car running and drivable again! I completely forgot how nice these cars are to drive. So at any rate, I am back in the game! Tuning and tuning and tuning some more. So far I have just over 800 miles on the motor and have turned up the boost to 15 lbs. The power and speed are downright SCARY!!!

I have done almost everything possible to the car to make it as sweet a fast as possible but keep it streetable since it is driven often. I think this is everything that I have done to the car...I am sure there is something I left out or mentioned twice...

wow, that is a really nice car.

I'm glad there are people that go through a lot to keep their FD on the road, instead of parting them.

good deal. glad to hear you got everything sorted out. I was in a similar situation, blew my engine back in like 03 then got another engine back in jan 07, put the engine in like june 07 then it sat again because it was flooding, and i had to put the intercooler and fab up an exhaust. i procrastinated at these final stages for awhile. Then got everything back together and all the bugs worked out about 4 months or so ago. I now have about 1300 miles on the car and its running great.

One question though isnt 800 miles a bit premature for 15lbs boost? my engine builder suggested no boost till 500 miles then another 1500 miles at 6 psi. changing the oil at 500 and 1500, then drive it like normal after. I guess everyone has their own break in style though.

im going to baby my car the first 500 miles then slowly up the boost till i get near 2000 miles on it.. but i cant really debate it.. some people go straight to a dyno after there engine is put in..

i prefer not to do this cause your compression will change some after it is build as we when you have 1000-2000 miles on it etc.. that could mean ur tune you get really quick could be lean or rich and boom bye bye motor.!! just my thoughts tho..

grats on getting it done. I think many FD owners can relate to a long term project..maybe not that long, but long none the less.

Have fun with the car again,

Tim
