Are most Temp Gauges on FD slightly higher ?

I test drove an FD and it seems that the needle on the temp gauge is close to "H" than "C".

Is this normal? I've heard that OEM Gauges are not that accurate.

Can someone please verify this?

Thanks in advance!

i know people say the temp gauge isnt accurate, i think it is because when i had a coolant flush it was below halfway mark the whole time the car was running. in hot weather running about 20 min in stop an go traffic my gauge was a little over half. i had the fan mod, it keeps running all the time, and a new thermostat, it now never goes over halfway. a fellow forum member told me this wasnt good for boost, it would make the car run too cold,he was wrong, my boost gauge tells me so ,anyway, the car u drove might need a coolant flush and a new thermostat. i think does have some kind of prob, that must be looked at quick.its seem that small problems on rx7 s can turn in to big ones quick good luck . btw i am selling my car on this forum check it out.

well, from my experience on my fd........ a lil more than half way is a no no.......... the temp guage is def. inaccurate, mine went a up a little more than half way, and when i checked it out, i needed a new radiator immediately.

On a stock guage, normal running temp has the needle pointing slightly below the halfway mark. Under any condition, I've never seen mine go over the halfway mark. Many on this board have said that the car will overheat before the needle ever gets to H. If your car has the needle pointing close to "H" I'd be worried that either the guage is faulty, or your car is close to overheating.

Mine is dead center, never really move more than 1mm or 1/32".

Stock gauge is not linear and doesn't provide advance notice before overheating. However, I wouldn't say it's not 'accurate'. You can modify the gauge so it's linear but your modified gauge will move quite a lot between the H and C marks during normal operations after the mod.

If your gauge is showing higher than 1/2 way, be wary of some problems. Flush the coolant and add a higher % of water, change the thermostat, and check fan thermoswitch (relay kicks on the fan). Also, turn on the parking light if you are sitting in traffic so the fans come on earlier. Or you can do the fan mod.

^^buy an aftermarket gauge

and my fd runs cool as hell currently.. i know its fall weather but i cant seem to break 190f ever..even with long drives, turn the fans off.. it stays at like 170-180f...

sometimes i think the gauge is broken or slow.. but then when i shut the car off, heatsoak will raise the needle to 200f pretty quick, thats how i know that it is working..

maybe im lucky? LOL

Are you stock? Mine consistently runs at 210f regardless of weather maybe just a bit cooler in COOL weather.

Well, I can't say for the US models... But for the Canadian Models, I know the 93's had the temp gauge sit either right at the middle or slightly above half way.

For some strange reason the 94+ models had the needle just a bit higher than half way...

My car has been like that since day 1. Even back when it was stock it always stayed at that level.
Now I have a new Fluidyne, the Power FC managing the fans, new thermostat, flushed coolant, and the needle still sits at that level...
It's normal for 94's because I even checked it with another friend of mine who has the same year... and it sits at that level too... Strange...

Lates,

cooling mods? pettit AST and thats it, run now im running 50/50 mix coolant

in the summer, however, i did notice the car would always sit at 200-205f and sometimes at 210 and never below 200f.. and i was still running 50/50 back then, but now with constant 45-55 degree weather outside, i cant even break 190f ever during driving.. it will just hover below 180f, sometimes i feel like i cant even boost cause of that damn gauge LOL

Please try going here:

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/G...technical.html

Stock gauge is designed to not move from roughly 155F to 215F or so. It appears damage can occur to the engine at 230F or slightly above. this gives precious little headroom on the stock gauge to tell you something is dreadfully wrong.

Linearize it as per the instructions and you have a nicely functioning gauge. It is easy. Really. And if you really need to know whether your engine is at 193.7F versus 190, then you are spending too much time looking at gauges and not enough time at the road. Just my opine...
