Hey Everyone, just curious what is the most miles you have been able to get out of one tank in your 3rd gen...I managed to get 380 last week. It was all highway miles though. Usually i only get about 220.

You must've been on fumes. I've never gotten more than 300-320.

LOL...like I said...usually I only get about 200-220 with normal city driving. The 380 I got was going 80 miles an hour with cruise control on for 2 1/2 hours straight...and returning home the next day doing the same.

I normally get a little over 400 miles per tank on the highway.

I manage about 220-230 a tank, mixed highway and city driving. I haven't taken a long road trip in a while, but I believe I got about 280 on a highway only trip to Houston a few years ago.

Just as a warning.

I have no idea why you guys are trying to see how many miles you can squeeze from your gas tank.

You're talking about a nearly 10 year old car. One that has deposits from the gas sitting in the bottom of the tank. Do you honestly want those deposits sucked into your engine???????

Unless you freshly scrubbed/cleaned your fuel tank, never run it that low. If you do, you're just asking for trouble. With all of the cars I drive, I always fill up when the meter hits roughly a 1/4 tank left.

I usually fill up when I've got about 5 gallons left. In the summer, I was getting 15 mpg (225 miles), now I'm getting more like 13 mpg (195 miles). Damn cold weather fuel corrections (not to mention additional warm up time)!

BTW, I learned the hard way after not listening about running your tank really low. Two weeks ago, I was down near E (only about 2-3 gallons left) and punched it merging on the freeway. I actually hit fuel starvation (it wan't fuel cut from overboosting) for a half second and it was not pleasant.....

I usually get almost exactly 200 miles with city driving. On the highway I typically drive 80 and fill up at about 300 miles. I fill up when my gauge gets to 1/4, put about 13 gallons in.

That is an old wives tale, anything that is suspended or sinks always has the same risk full or empty, of being sucked into your fuel pick-up which is located at the bottom of your tank. The only thing that would have a higher risk of getting sucked in when you are near E is the stuff that floats, and if you have much stuff floating on top of your gas you need to stop filling up in Mexico. Besides, why do you have a fuel filter that needs to be replaced every few years?

How about using a fuel filter?

Well, what happens when your fuel filter gets clogged? You're better off just keeping some gas in your fuel tank.

Tom93R1: Have you changed your fuel filter? Every time that I've changed a fuel filter on a car, the gas leaves a gritty feeling on my hands. (I'm not questioning whether you do work on your car or not, but that is just my experience =) ).

I know a number of Datsun 510 guys who totally cleaned out their fuel tanks to get rid of the sediments.

I guess if you believe it or not, it is up to you. Personally, I would rather make an extra trip or two than risk supposed sediments being sucked into my engine.

the rx7 recirculates the fuel through the system, the tank will stay a lot cleaner than a tank without a return line, like your datsun 510. in fact most of the new mazdas dont even have fuel filters at all.

and i went 380miles, we could have gone a tad further but we all had to pee really bad

Most of the new Mazdas don't have fuel filters? Really??? I didn't know that. The new Hummers have fuel filters and Mazda doesn't??? Am I missing something? (BTW, the fuel filters on the Hummers are actually directly above the fuel tank, meaning you have to drop the tank to access the filter...sucks huh?).

I just recently replaced my injectors and saw my gas mileage increase. I had noticed it declining over the past year and it must have been leaky injectors.

On the highway cruising at 75 and 80 I can make 350 miles without stretching it. In town driving normal (for me) I get about 240.

Actually I just changed my fuel filter last summer. That grit is why you change the fuel filter every couple years no matter how low you let the gas get.
Advice: dont lay on the ground directly below the filter with your eyes and mouth open when pulling the lines from the filter. Wear safety glasses, take your shirt off, keep your mouth closed and have a backyard pool to jump into (or a shower in a pinch).

I agree with you, dont let it get down to E, but my reason is that I dont want to be stuck on the side of the road with no gas.

You guys must all live in big cities, where you do a good deal of freeway driving. I live in a small city with no freeways..maybe that is why you get damn good gas mileage...

let's talk about the most realistic low fuel problem: fuel slosh. If I let the tank in my 93 go below about 1/4 or even sometimes at just under 1/3, I can get fuel cutout on very hard left turns. (we're talking sliding around turns sideways here, not some granny driving).

Not good. For this reason, I always fill up at about 1/3 tank. I get maybe 150 miles to a "tank" this way, but who cares.

Wouldn't regular driving and turning, going over bumps and what not stir it up anyway?

But anyway, I don't run mine low because I too have hit the fuel cut on a hard turn...

And... I get about 280 to a tank on the highway.
