momentary dead fuel level gauge????

I went to the store yesterday. On my way out i floored it and went almost sideways. Well, for some reason i got some break up at around 6k so i backed off. Threw a quick eye at the PFC commander, boost was below target(.62), knock was low(35), and the next thing i look at was the fuel level gauge. I knew i had about 1/4 tank left but when i looked at it it was on E!!! For a sec there i almost craped my pants. lol I drove it very gingerly to a gas station. Dropped $10 worth of 93(like 3 gallons, what a joke). The damn gauge didnt move. I'm thinking, its dead let me go home and take a look at it. So i get on my way and half way home, the damn thing comes back to life! WTH??? I just replaced it about 2 months ago cause mine was erratic and always read about 4 gallons less than the actual amount in the tank.
Anyone ever had this happen???

I replaced the sending unit in the tank & haven't had any issues since.

Prior to that the gauge went to E during a long cruise. I stopped to fill it up & only put in $35, so it was no where near empty. (current gas price joke)

i was getting sideways in a parkinglot over and over again and my gauge crapped on me just like how you describe. i took the baffle out, looked at it, put it back in, and it magically started to work next time i refueled.

I've been having problems with mine, too. Close inspection has revealed that the sending unit may have a couple of tiny wear spots causing a disruption. Also, the pivot point that the float arm sits in seems slightly worn, because the arm can move front-to-back a bit too much, which could let the contact come off of the slide contact points and cause the gauge to act up. I very carefully adjusted my contact so that it puts a bit more pressure downward onto the slide contact, and I'll see if that works out. Odds are that replacing the sending unit would fix the problem, since the gauge seems to respond normally when a slow sweep of the arm is made outside of the tank.
