Question MMO and Emissions

I read another thread that eluded that you can't pass emissions/inspection if you have MMO in your gas tank.

I'm taking the seven for inspection this week and i was wondering if i need to burn this tank of gas.

NOOOOOOO!

I was told my Chris Ott, Ari Yallon (of Rotary Performance)*and* Steve Kan that Marvel Mystery Oil is bad **** and not to pre-mix with it.

I use Pennzoil 100% Synth 2-stroke oil (1 oz per 3 gallons) and it works great....20 bucks per gallon at Walmart .

Just for you, I called Chris Ott at RP just now .

He doesn't have any hard proof that MMO ruins motors, so take all of this with a grain of salt.

He said he doesn't recommend using it because:

It's a penetrating oil.
Using it is like putting WD-40 in your gas tank.
It's similar to a parts cleaner solution but very diluted.
It is a thin bodied oil which displaces other oil.

He went on to recommend using 100% sythetic 2 stroke oil (I use pennzoil--20 bones at Walmart for a gallon) as premix.

For all those Power FC owners out there, he also said you can use the Datalogit to crank up the duty cycle of the MOP, which makes using premix a moot point. Remember, the MOP squirts oil directly into the area where the apex seals pass (where you need lubrication the most), whereas premix just comes in with the gas.

Hope this helps--
Rich

MMO was origionally formulated to lubricat the sliding vanes in vane type air compressors & air tool motors - very similar to the apex seals in rotary engines? It has VERY high film strength and near 0 ash content and stron detergent properties - it will disolve carbon deposits and mises redily with other oils - it is not like WD-40 at all, the WD in WD-40 stands foe WATER DISPLACING and its origional inteded use was for cleanig guns & other precision mechanisms that had been imersed in water, it is actually a very poor lubricant with low film strenght. and high volitility.

I first heard of MMO on the forum, and then I asked a guy that I worked with over the Summer about it, because he was a mechanic and managed heavy machinery. He said that he used MMO to bring diesel engines back to full power with just one use. That's when I started using it.

I don't think anyone knows, so just don't put it in your tank on the day of the smog test, just to be safe.

Run a full tank without it and add a bottle of "garaunteed to pass" emission stuff. Use that whole tank of gas, then fill with another clean no addative, no premix, no MMO tank of gas and then take the test. After the test, you can put the MMO back in.

I dont run it in my GAS, I dont run any Premix at all - thats what the OMP is for. I just it as an OIL additive - I put it in at each oil change.

Rich, thanks for your input =)

I was told my Chris Ott, Ari Yallon (of Rotary Performance)*and* Steve Kan that Marvel Mystery Oil is bad **** and not to pre-mix with it.

based on direct experience or heresay?

it does seem to break up carbon deposits in the engine and my vacuum at idle definitely increased from 14 to 16 after 3-4 tankfulls with 6 oz pre-mix....what negative affects it may have over time is anyone's guess, but I really don't see how it could harm the engine as long as the OMP is still functioning properly

Howdy,

I honestly think it's a case of an educated guess versus scientific evidence. I've been told indirectly that Dave at KDR says it's ok to use MMO, so I don't know what to think.

I *do* know that the back of my gallon jug of Pennzoil 100% synth 2-stroke oil says it;'s "100% ashless" and "to be used in engines with oil-injection."

I'm gonna shoot 'ol Dave an email and see what he says.

thanks, Rich....I know you and Dave are tight

I guess my biggest concern would be what effect, if any, a high detergent additive such as MMO has on motor oil....

since I use Mobil 1, I would be interested to hear what Mobil has to say about MMO....of course Mobil would be a little (!) biased, so it probably would not be good
