Thumbs down Missed 4th today

I was getting on the freeway, going up the rpms pretty fast..
And ended up missing 4th and got into 2nd, over revving my car to almost 9k! and the tires lost some traction. (good thing it wasn't in the rain!)
Weird thing too was it shifted so smoothly into 2nd it felt just like 4th. Until i let the clutch out of course...
I think the reason i went into 2nd so easily was i learned how to drive stick on a 350z and the gear box is slanted towards the driver.. So 4th is closer to the driver then it is in other cars. Could have been what caused the mistake in the FD.

I do admit I'm not the most experienced with a stick shift; about a year now..

Nothing seems to be damaged so far, I'm sure it did add some wear to the tranny and engine though no doubt.

This happen to anyone else? This never happened to me in the Z.

I have a RHD FD and i have miss shifted to the reverse (from 3rd) twice at the track, never got it in gear and never released the clutch

Shifting with the left hand sucked the first week, but now, two years later it isent a problem anymore, and my tranny did survive the abuse (just two small grinds) haha

Or you could go to the root of the issue and look at the stock motor mounts, PPF, and diff bushings.

Only after those have been replaced would I personally add the torque brace.

Most people miss shifts because they don't know how to grip/hold the shift **** properly. You'd be amazed at how learning how to grip/hold the shift **** will help you hit the right gear at the right time.

Bingo! The way I shift keeps my hand in a position that doesn't physically allow me to miss shifts.

Check your motor mounts , ppf and dif mounts .If they are good and you want an engine torque brace ,there is a group buy going on now for the Garfinkle ETB .

You're either a un-choordinated noob or you need better motor mounts. I'm leaning toward the first option. The truth hurts.

If you find that you need mounts and are handy, search for urethane sandwich mounts. If you're lazy and have the cash, look up the noltecs.

So true for me. My shifting is much smoother with my new RX-8 ****. The stock one with a B&M short throw lent itself to missed shifts.

The problem that most people have is that they hold the gear shift from the back, like a gun. If you are holding it like a gun, you can't direct it properly and that causes a lot of mis-shifts. Probably 90% of the people I've seen driving manuals hold the gear shift that way. On most cars, like a Honda Civic, it's not really an issue. People need to grab the shifter more at the top. It gives better control.

There is a diagram floating around on the web of the way to use your hand to put the car into each gear. There is also a YouTube video of someone demonstrating it. Now, I don't necessarily suggest people shift that way. I tried it years ago and it felt just too darn awkward. But at least getting the hand in the right position to shift is important.

I've actually started to hold my **** (car ****) like a syringe. Top in my palm angled down, body of **** between my middle/ring finger, and ring/pinky curled around.

Brace wont help with 3-4 shift if he's getting second instead...it will actually get worse...

as for grip.....3-4 grip should be with palm on top/inside of shifter...

I don't think bad shifting can be cured with a torque brace or motor mounts.
