midpipe worth it?
midpipe worth it?
hey guys i wanted to know if a midpipe is worth getting. I have downpipe and cat-back. i also have a pfc that has been tuned. anyways i want to know a forsure answer about getting one or not. i will be keeping the oem cat for smog. i have searched with mixed answers i need a final.
There are NUMEROUS discussions about the advantages/disadvatages on downpipes here. There are lots of differing opinions not to mention risks/ changes it really will make to the car depending on other mods you have. In short, a downpipe is a good way to free up a bit more power. But not without the risk of spiking (as mentioned above), also a problem of boost creep, you need to port the wastegate, it is quite a bit louder if it is not a resonated midpipe, and really I would also reccomend you get retuned should you decide to go ahead with this. So it is at cheapest a $100 part with several hundred dollars of associated costs to do this one mod PROPERLY. But please do a search and read the thousands of other things said about the downpipe debate.
Me personally, I have a love/hate relationship with mid pipes or resonated mid pipes.
A straight mid pipe is too frickin loud (unless you like that sort of attention) and the exhaust fumes are nauseating and you'll probably have issues managing boost. All hate on this one.
Some resonated mid pipes sounds pretty good but have the same problems as above. Kinda love it but damn it stinks.
They do improve spool time and power though which we all love...

just ported my wastegate.
i have:
downpipe, pettit high-flow cat midpipe, magnaflow dual tip exhaust
prior to porting i would get a decent spike. now, after porting the wastegate, i get a nice clean pattern.

Hey guys,
About this subject.... If i run a mid pipe in my car without a dump pipe... will i get boost creep?
If i run a dump with a stock mid pipe, will i get more power and no creep? or is it better with a stock dump, aftermarket mid pipe and cat back?

Ok, assuming dump pipe = downpipe:
dump pipe and stock cat is fine. Some power boost, no creep, and usually no change in boost pattern.
stock dump pipe and aftermarket mid and cat-back may creep, will probably spike, and will also require boost control adjustment. It will be loud, stinky, and add more power if your boost is kept in control.
I would put on just an aftermarket dump pipe and cat-back and keep the oem cat. Unless you really feel a need for noise and stench, this works really well.

I run a down pipe, mid pipe and stock cat back with no boost creep issues. I have done so for 3 years. This setup makes 307HP on the G-Tech.
The trick is to have some exhaust restriction.
There has been some posts about adding a restrictor plate to the exhaust system so a cat back can be added without other mods(ported waste gate,PFC, ect). That works too.
Be sure and test carefully: your results may vary.

I already have a Twin N1 on the car but I want more response when i put my foot down... I was thinking I will install the dump and heat wrap it and just see what happens... I love the raw sound of a straight through but I dont want issues either...
