Talking Midpipe Question

Here is my dillema...I have PFS Downpipe, HKS carbon Ti catback, and looking to replace my stock cat, I dont want it to be that loud, i am happy with the car right now, but want the results without too much noise and cops pulling me over...I got some Ideas, now I dont care about emissions since it is once every 2 years and I can put back my stock cat for that, I do want a midpipe gains and not the noise, Now tell you the truth I never heard an rx-7 with a midpipe, but I read that it was pretty loud, now now much louder with the midpipe will my car be percent % wise and maybe description? and how much difference will a resonator/straight thru cat (same thing) do in terms of reducing noise, now the resonator i was thinking of is a 16 inch in length and how much if any noise reduction will it do if i put 2 of them on the midpipe side by side...Thank you

i was thinking the same thing, but after i got rearened and my catback was smashed i got a new one with a muffler and its about the same loudness with a midpipe as my other catback without. So you can always go with something more conservative like the racing beat or something and then also do the resonator.

Switching to a midpipe with your current setup will make the car twice as loud as it is now.....

Do you have all of the other mods to support a midpipe?

I had a borla xr-1 resonator. it did a good job of reducing the noise at idle and normal driving. It is still pretty loud at WOT and such - but not as loud as a stright midpipe. Either way, the car is still louder than an average car, and people will here you coming and going. Don't forget the gas fumes - they're bad. I've given up my midpipe for a high-flow.

i would go with a 3" straight thru muffler in the MP, it reduces the noise alot. It still is loud at WOT, but i have the dreaded dual N1's. i bought 3" straight thru magnaflow and another 3" resonator for the DP. The magnaflow reduced so much that im not gonna go with the other resonator in the dp.

The magnaflow is a good alternative for the expensive borla. Got mine for $85 and its full stainless steel. 14" x 6" body, overall lenth 18" part # 14619. I did have to dent the body of the muffler alittle for more clearance of the driveshaft; so check your clearance.

Good luck

i have the veilside evo catback and strait exhaust from the turbos,
dont think it is so loud at normal driving. no droning at all, butt at woot! holy flying hell.
it screeams when you pass 4500rpm and the second turbo kiks in,,
puts a smile on my face ewery time
and the flames!!

just kill the cat, you wont regret it,,,
and if it is a litte loud, just ad some brownbread to the trunk an most of the noise will be gone

Thanks for the reply all of you....

To further my setup is that I am going to be putting a FMIC and a Radiator and Power FC, and since I am going to get it tuned I might as well add a midpipe and try to reduce the noise on it, I do realize that the replacement of the cat will make my car sound twise as loud, I would like to be under the dadar between 1-3.5k RPM for the sake of normal driving/cruising and avoiding getting pulled over by cops...

Now here is the link of the ebay straight through ca/muffler I was thinking on putting on, and while you are checking this out putting 2 instead of one of these on the midpipe will make how much of a difference compared to midpipe alone, 1 of them or 2 of them one after the other...thanks...

For all that you're saying, IMO a high-flow cat is the ideal answer.

Since noise is a concern, I recommend a magnaflow in the midpipe, and a RB catback. It will be louder than stock, but not totally obnoxious. It will stink too.

I like my current setup, its loud, but kind of perfect and not 2 loud PFS downpipe, stock cat and HKS Carbon Ti cat-back...

I have a stock cat and dont want another brick style cat...

Yes I thought of having a high flow cat from random and such, I'm sorry I'm just picky and want to achieve the power and not be 2 much louder than my setup right now, and I dont want to buy/trade to a different exhaust...

PS

I love flames...lol

That is the exact setup I have. Ive never encountered a 7 with aftermarket exhaust thats been quieter than mine. It is a noticable difference over stock though. Very deep. Its not loud at all, but I guess the low bassy tone of it still manages to set off car alarms. Hell, I get 2 different cars to chirp at me everytime I drive through my apt complex. And Im cruising in 1st gear at mabye 2500 rpms. At WOT it sounds great.

Midpipe with an HKS Ti is going to be ear shattering.

and also on the magnaflo, how much did you have to bang the can down to clear the driveshaft...or better yet how much room in height from the 3" piping up is there...Thanks

I had a straight MP and it was way too loud. I then bought the rx7store Resonated MP(w/ a big-*** magna flow muffler) and the sound is downright quiet. I have no problems cruising right next to a cop....

well, i got the 6" canister, had to bang it with a hammer a good bit. without denting it, i had about 1/4" clearance (that with drivetrain sagging at lowest point), to make sure i beat it until i had about 3/4" - 1". If you are worried get a 4" or like a retangular ones, like the rx7store resonated MP.

It lowered the noise...i would say a good 75%; you have to remeber the N1's are one of the loudest, so it made a BIG difference.
