to midpipe or not?

hey everyone,

first time poster, long time reader here. i'm wondering if an addition of a mp is recommended or not for my setup.
i currently have a dp, cb, smic, intake and m2 ecu upgrade. i know m2 doesn't recommend getting a mp, they feel you'll loose boost control. with the m2 ecu, i'm getting 12psi of boost now, will getting the mp make it go higher, 14+? or will it still be limited to 12? my car's a daily driver, with possible occasional trips to the track.

what do you guys think? can you list out the pros and cons with getting a mp? i know it's gonna smell more and make it louder. also, what mp is recommended? are they all the same?

thanks.

I would recommend the Pettit resonated unit. Still all of the advantages of a true MP without all of the noise. You will probably experience more boost creep and higher boost numbers while running an MP though. Just set your boost lower to compensate for the raise you'll get and you should be fine. Although I don't know if you can adjust the M2 ECU or not. I have only had experiences with the PFC, Haltech, and PFS "Purple Box". Just my .02 Best of luck to you.

thanks for the reply. m2 unit doesn't allow for adjustment. so, eventhough m2 is set to 12 right now, it might creep beyond that with a mp? how much boost should i expect with a mp?

i'll look into the pettit resonated pipe.

from what i've read some people are able to control boost with a mp, some aren't...if you aren't able to i think you might have to port your wastegate. i would think twice if you really need the extra power, especially for a daily driver.

Even if you rasie a few lbs, you CAN always just get a simple boost controler to bring it back down. You don't need to get a fancy electronic one.

I just drove mine for the first time after installing my midpipe and it is loud, let me reiterate....LOUD!!! I got a cop headed towards me in the on coming lane to a turn around and start following me because it was such an attention grabber.

There are definite power advantages to a midpipe - about 35-40 peak rwhp. Boost can be controlled with a ported wastegate and boost controller - some have even installed pop-off valves to help.

Personally, if this is a daily driver or a car that's driven alot I'd think twice about the midpipe. It's incredibley L O U D!!!!! Especially with your turbos setup non-seq. - it's unbearable. It stinks like a truckstop in your car. And you lose some low-end power and torque. All your power is going to be above 6K rpms where it is a demon. If you're looking for good dyno numbers and track times - get the midpipe. But some decent HF cats have produced almost as much hp as midpipes, don't smell, help control boost and provide alot more low-midrange power and torque. It's a tradeoff of things really.

I recently put on an efini y-pipe and a stock air box mod. The car felt really fast. Then I installed my boost gauge. Found I was boosting to 15 1/2psi. I have an M2 ecu upgrade. It doesn't do anything to control boost.

I immediately installed the "home Depot" boost controller. It works great. Easy to install. Easy to adjust. Cost under $10.

Flybye, shame on you. 10,000 posts and you put up this? Bad boy---you need a spanking from 7sweetie .

The midpipe will give you drastically decreased backpressure and uncontrollable boost. A boost controller will NOT help this issue. Without backpressure the wastegate cannot adequately vent all the exhaust energy away from the turbine.

I crept to 13 psi on a warm day, 15 psi on a cold day--WITH a ported wastegate.

I strongly recommend you go with a high flow cat. Many times a midpipe will result in boost creep and a blown motor.

PM me if you have any more questions .

Thanks everyone, since I drive about 80 miles a day, I'll hold off on the mp for now. Guess I'll have to find another job closer to my house and walk to work. That way, no more need to drive the 7 80 miles and install the mp then. Things we do for performance.

if you do a mp you need to port the wastegate and also possibly get bigger injectors if you want to run higher boost. Boost creep is dangerous and i've known people to blow their engines from boost creep. a boost controller won't help this unless your wastegate is ported. not only is a mp loud but it smells too...I can't even drive for long periods of time before my eyes start to water or my throat starts to hurt, and I get sleepy and drowsy too from the fumes.
