May be buying RX7, how to tell if R1 or not

I tried to do a search, but R1 is under the 3 letter minimum. There is a 93 silver RX7 near me for sale, and I am very interested. Guy says it is an R1. I has some mods too. STB's, Apexi controller, Greddy turbo timer, some extra gauges, exhaust, but underhood looks relatively stock. It is an auto with a spoiler and no moonroof. It has an aftermarket Apline head unit. Was the Bose system usually kept by the owners in these things? It is a TX car. If it sound familar to anyone, I would love further info. Car was curbed and bent all 4 rims, f swaybar, and damaged the engine cradle. Car runs and sound great. Asking $6500. Worth it? Thanks in advance guys.

Make sure the frame isnt bent, or its not worth jack to drive...!

If its under 80k miles, manual, and has a rebuilt or is original, it will be worth around 6500 due to the damaged title. I reccomend taking it to a mazda dealer or trusty shop and having them look it over to make sure that its fine.

R1 don't have sunroof, Criuse control but then it come with strut bar, dual oil cooler, better suspension, spoiler, etc.. If that car is auto then it's not R1..

There were no silver R1s in 1993. The R1 was replaced in 94 by the R2 with some slight changes. The R2s were available in silver if i'm not mistaken.

A sunroof MAY have been added as a dealer installed option, but a good way to tell an R1 is the passenger side oil cooler. R1 spoilers could easily be added to non-R1s, but adding the oil cooler would be rare. I'd write down the VIN number and have someone at a dealer confirm the model and see if theres any "history" on it.

Thanks again guys. So the R1 does not have any badging eh? I do not think the guy is a liar, he just does not know what he is talking about. Told another guy that it was well modded and making big power (600+). I told him that there are not many 600hp RX7's, and one quick look under the hood would let him know. Anyway, guy is simply a used car dealer (buys damaged cars at auctions and such all over country, sells hundreds a year).

So I should try to talk him down some? It looks like $1000 and I could have it fixed up very nice. Seems like RX7's cost so much, that this one seemed like a good deal. (actually I am asking for a friend. My poison is SHO's). I hope he gets it though, as long as it is not too damaged. I love them little cars.

BTW, anyone familar with a red triple rotor single turbo in TX? That guy ran on a club drive with us near Austin, very sweet car.

Sunroof was NEVER a dealer installed option, I wish people would quit spreading this around. At least not a factory style sunroof (double bubble). The "RX-7 Handbook" is wrong about sunroofs coming optional on R2 (or R1s for that matter).

Sounds like a silver base model. For $6500 he is asking too much. The auto trans really devalues the car. Probably has a salvage title too?

dual oil coolers are a quick way to tell if it's R1/R2 package.

Yes, they did make Silver R2s... And 600+ hp??? I doubt it too... I would tell your friend to go try to find another one. And I think a manual would be best over an auto. But before he buys any 7 just make sure he gets it checked out... Compression and boost pattern and the normal stuff you look into when buying a used car...

I strongly agree with Joker. The seller is a liar and I would walk away from that deal. Get on www.autotrader.com and hunt for a decent machine. You should even be able to find an R1/R2 that has been taken care of.

I looked at many cars before I bought mine and everyone said they had an R1. I dont know if they were lying or just uninformed but it is easy to tell if it is an r1 as it will have "suede like" seats as opposed to leather or cloth. Many of the "R1's" i looked at had leather seats sunroofs and bose...lol I just factored it into my proposed price for the vehicle. I only told 1 guy he did not have an R1 and that was a big mistake. i hope people are just uninformed and not so sinister....people sell rx7s that have burn marks all over the engine bay and no engine for that price....so it just depends on what you want to sign on for. Figure a decent condition silver rx will run around $16,000 subtract a bit for the auto tranny and factor in the repairs necessary to get it to run and you have a price. good luck

R1/R2's are not automatics. You will have 2 oil coolers in an automatic - 1 oil and one for the trans so it will look like 2 oil coolers. The suede seats are a tip off of an R model. Also look for the brake ducts going to the front spoiler. I'm sure there's a way to tell the model from the VIN number - anyone know how?
