master key for rear bin?
#2
don't race, don't need to
Check the END of your key. Is it smooth, or is it notched? The reason I ask is Mazda released two types of keys for evey car. One has the end notched (best way I can describe it). This key will open ANY lock. The other is not, and is only supposed to be able to open the doors and start the car. This is the "valet" key. If you only have the valet key, you are in your predicament.
My advice is to go to the nearest Mazda dealership. If you give them your VIN, they can order a set of keys for you (oddly, mine had the keys in stock!) and/or notch the end of your key to allow it to fit and operate all locks. They SHOULD ask you for proof of ownership, so bring the registration. If they don't, you can end up with a situation like what happened a few months ago, wherein a forum member got his car stolen by another member by the other going to the dealership and getting keys made. Ouch does not BEGIN to descibe THAT one!!
Hope this helps...
Then you can find out what lurks in that box, eh?

Interesting thread. When I bought my car, the original owner was confused about the keys, because the locks were changed after one got messed up by a would-be thief years ago. I got 3 keys that all seemed to work fine, so I didn't think about it again, until I saw this thread. Now that I look, none of them have the notch, and none of them will lock the rear bin.
Now I have absolutely no idea what I've got. If I go to Mazda, I bet I would end up with the original key, which probably won't match my current locks. Of course you also have to wonder if they even thought to change the bin lock. Maybe they can notch one of my current keys and see if it works, but that would be toooooo easy.
Thanks for the info.

I have both types of keys and the "master" key has a black plastic base (have two of these) while the "valet" key is just solid metal with no plastic at the base (have only one). Is that the way it is with you guys too?

Most dealerships no longer carry the "master" style key with the black plastic surround. So you will get the plain metal valet style, and then they can notch it for you. If you REALLY need the black plastic (like I do 'cause it's cool and all that) you can of course get a spare made from a blank at a key shop, but it might not have the Mazda logo.
For the problem of replacement locks: I would suspect that the lock set numbers (a 5 or 6 digit code, I can check later) for the new locks were recorded when sold to the individual who replaced them if the repalcements were from Mother Mazda. Check with the parts guy... he can pull up the complete service record for your VIN, and both codes should show, IF they did things correct, and we ALL know that can be a big if. Lastly, you might be able to get the code from the key itself, either stamped on it (unlikely, as this would trace found keys to a VIN and subsequent theft!) or the bumps can be decoded, though this requires effort (=time/money and rolled eyes).
Enough!!

Do I have the same problem? I have two keys. One has a round head and one a square head. The round head will unlock the passenger door and start the car. The sqaure head will open the driver door only. Neither will open the trunk.
I have to use a different key for different doors and neither will open the trunk?

Not the expert here (though the most voluble!) but I'm thinking different locks in your case. Round head probably valet style, driver's door lock changed. Ouch!

Next time I'm near the dealer, I'll talk to them about notching the key, and see what they have to say. This will stay on the todo list, though it's the least of my problems.
Thanks,

If the dealer can't get you the plastic covered key, you can get the Efini version from RX7 store.
If you can't get both the plastic covered and the plain metal Efini ones from RX7store, then you sould be able to get both of tem from jt-imports.

I only got one key with my car. And no stock alarm remote.
The end is round, and it opens up both doors, the trunk, and works in the ignition. But not the bins. I need to get a key for the bins.

Three keys came with the car; 2 master keys that will unlock every lock on the car and a all metal "Valet" key that just opens the doors and starts the car. The two master keys have the black plastic tops with the Mazda ensignia in the middle. FWIW
