manual to auto?

I snapped the main shaft in my 5 speed and was thinking about going AUTO......what should I do?I don't want to fix it and break it again.Don't auto's take more abuse than a 5-speed?

How did this happen ? Please explain the details that caused the failure. It is not trun that automatics take more abuse, unless sufficiently beefed up and cooled.

if you are serious then I would go domestic, like as powerglide or some such. and no, the stock auto does not withstand more abuse. on the plus side, you will never worry about snapping anything as there will be no 5000 rpm launches.

I got the tranny out and you can see the main shaft broke off in part of the drive shaft. If I can't get the broken peice out I might have to buy another drive shaft too.
