main bearing installation

i am in the process of putting my motor together and find that i have 4 thou clearance on my front main bearing.

out of spec

so i will call ray at malloy monday. i do have a 20 ton press but am wondering if i should buy the special tool to press it out and in or whether i should just job it out.

i would appreciate any advice.

thanks,

Might be more worth it to find someone to install the bearing for you. It would probably run you less than the tool would.

I'd find a rotary shop that has the appropriate tool, BTW, and not just a regular machine shop.

Neither. Find any piece of pipe or chunk of metal that would be suitable to press out the old bearing, even if it might cause a little damage to the old bearing. Once you get it out, use it to press the new ones in, with the good side of the old bearing against the new bearing.

if you're planning to press a lot of things, then get a press.
