interesting mazda reman find today...
During a teardown and cleaning of a customer's blown FD reman (~15-30k miles, we guess) I found several issues, some of which could be build issues. The most alarming of which was the fact that this engine, which had chipped apex seals on the front rotor due to detonation (broken at the weakest point, the tip of the long piece), had 1 9.0:1 CR rotor which is a stock FD rotor, and one 9.7:1 CR rotor which is a stock 89-91 nonturbo rotor. And yeah, you guessed it, the blown seals belonged to the 9.7 rotor, which was in the front. We all know that you're about 80% more likely to blow a rear rotor/seals than the front, due to detonation, so this is a clear sign that the high compression was at fault here since the car was not highly modded.
OF course I will replace this rotor with another stock 9.0 rotor for the rebuild.

I've been around long enough to know what a mazda reman looks like. It has the blue tag on the front cover, the painted silver front cover and rotorhousings, and the red anodized paint on the heads of the tension rods.
Plus all that extra white/clear sealant **** oozing from the oilpan/front cover/housing joints
There is NO DOUBT in my mind this is a true mazda reman. I just dont know exactly how many miles it had. IT has to be more than 1.5 years old, though, because it had 3pc seals installed, but less than about 3 years old, which is when they started putting the blue tags on, IIRC.

also for the past few years they have been using a red sealer on some of the motors

Most of the ones I see are white/clearish sealer, used in excess. I bet the cost of remans could come down $25 if they'd cut back on that sealant!
I must have gotten bad info about the tags, I was told they started using them around 01 or so. I have seen some remans without tags, but I had no clue of their history so they could have been pre-97 remans.
