Question M2 Intake Owners Advice?

Ive narrowed my search for a new intake down to The Pettit and the M2. Aside from the general lack of quality of workmanship commonly reported by Pettit owners, several owners complain about unpleasant "mooing" noises. Several M2 owners have commented they were pretty quiet, which makes sense. Would any current or former M2 intake owners give me your overall evaluation and comment on the sounds (or lack thereof).

The moo comes from the airpump. And there is no sound to worry about from the airpump with the M2 intake, it's a good unit, but quality of workmanship isnt stellar on the M2 as well. Hex bolts end up disappearing by falling into the intake box itself because the threads on the box themselves get damaged. But it's nothing to really worry about if you take good care of the unit. If possible get the non CF version, that's what I did( I have had both).

I have the CF M2 intake and it's quiet. For some reason it didn't fit perfectly, the top hits the hood liner.

You also need to be careful when you put on the air filters- make sure they can't come off. You might want to check periodically or leave the top off for awhile. Mine were a real tight fit and sometime during a track weekend, one of them came off. I didn't find out until after the weekend. The dirt getting into the turbos sand-blasted the compressor wheel and its all chewed up now. Luckily they needed to be replaced anyways, and it was a good excuse to upgrade to a single turbo.

All in all though, I do think its one of the best available.

I previously had the Pettit intake and now use the M2 CF. The M2 is BY FAR quieter than the Pettit. The M2 CF intake was a perfect fit although the install can be a bit tricky. Still, I have never had any problems with it rubbing or filters falling off. I prefer the M2 CF over the older M2 Al since the M2 CF is trimmed at the top plus its fully enclosed.

Overall, very pleased with the M2 CF and have no plans of parting with it(like I did with the Pettit). If sound is a concern to you, avoid the Pettit intake.

You look at the CWC box? It's tough to get, and pricey, but I hear it's pretty nice too. At least comparable to M2. Opinions?

the top portion of the carbon fiber box is very flimsy and very thin....if you could get the metal box I would go that route...

have you looked at the rx7fashion cold air box...the worksmanship is far superior to either one of m2's units...

Thanks for that input. I'd like to get other comments from rx7fashion intake owners. Are they also quieter than "open" systems? How is installation? A couple M2 Intake owners report lack of directions and short hoses making installation a little tricky. What about the rxfashion box?

I have the M2 CF and love it. It takes about an hour or so to install, take your time and it will fit just right. You can find installation directions on the net.

I highly recommend it. The only noise it makes is the BOV whoosh.

I dont know about the need for instructions, it is straight foward. A little bit of common sense, and some hand tools, and you'll be fine. I have not had any issues with the short hoses that you are talking about.

I think it's unacceptable to buy an intake that may have its filter pop off and rub the hood. I refuse to put any part in my car that doesn't fit well and work properly - let alone the possibility of it failing my turbos/engine.

If I were you, I would look into modifying the stock box with some holes and hoses to the nose and get a K&N drop in. That's just me.

I've had 5 intakes..
1. stock
2.HKS
3. Pettit
4 m2(metal)
5 rx7fashion

Pettit was a nice intake served it's purpose very well...but I always wanted a closed box intake...the m2 is very nice, but I was not happy with the quality of the welds (rough) and fitment...then I purchased the rx7fashion box...which frankly is almost identical to the m2 box...but has better welds...better top fitment..actually sits a little lower and wont rub the hood. The secret to installing these boxes at make sure the sit all the way down...this is the hardest part.

As for noise I didn't notice and huge difference between pettit,m2,rx7fashion... as for the pipes...if you have hard(aluminum/stainless) intake pipes...some fitment/cutting/trimming my be required...the lower intake hose is always biaaacth anyways..

good luck with you decision...
