Use a small amount of graphite lube, or lithium grease, i agree it works a lot better and puts less wear on the key and the tumblers.

I dont know if this was a good idea but I stuck my key into a bottle of Pettit fuel lubricant and put it in the keyhole. Even after months of use (then even more months of sitting) the door locks feel better than my new car. SMOOTH.

Mercedes make a special grease for their mechanical locks that also contain microswitches for the alarm system.
Graphite would cause a "short" since it is conductive.
It is Mercedes pn# A 001.989.26.51 10
It has a special applicator to "open" the lock's front cover, and it is special grease that does not gum, harden, and minimal attraction to dust.
I've used on my '93 FD with no problems, and every lock is nice and smooth in its action.
