LS1 Vs. Fd for lots of money

We have a customer that has a i think 2000 or 2001 Z28 with a manual transmission, a crazy looking 4" single exhaust, Granatelli(sp) mass air meter, and intake. He puts down 300-315 hp and 350 torque. Runs 13.5 @ 108, with do traction at all, he basically launches off idle on regular street tires. I raced a modded z28 automatic in my modded TII, I beat him off the line by half a car, but the camero was with me all the way, i could not shake him. You would not expect a lot of high end from a v8, but its got **** load of mid range power. My TII ran 13.8, my fd ran a 13.2 @108 with full exhaust. the race will be close. The best thing to do is to go the a drag strip on a test and tune and compare time slips from a few runs its pretty easy to cheat on a street race. I see lots of people that like to take the early launch from a red light. And the most important thing to do is to get a clean launch. If you really want to win try slipping the **** out of you clutch when you launch, its kind of hard to explan but if you do it fast enough at lik 5k the car will just squat and fly off the line. I was only able to do it a few times. Dont drop the clutch, you will most likely loose or break something.

Just on a side note, if 5 bones is "lots of money", then why are you racing for cash? Don't get me wrong, that's a lot of dough to me as well ... but wouldn't you be better off saving that money for the intake or ECU or whatever you're thinking of next?

In regards to a comment in my first post about the Civics. EK9220ps, you said you used to hang with them on the drag. Now I know why. Dude, you were not even close to being a stock Civic! Quite a sleeper you had.
I can't wait for this to happen.
Just don't bet money.

However, I'm sure that your knock readings went down significantly and I don't doubt that the car "felt" better. I'm just trying to fight against the myth that you gain a bunch of free hp by just raising the octane.

Higher octane won't do jack for that Camaro but it will help a modded FD on a cold night under high load with higher than stock boost.
And it's not "free" HP. It's $6 per galon.
If it was "free" I'd run it all day long.
So would you.

I won Guys!!! I put my car back together last night went up to work and he was up there. We raced from a light and i got him by half a car length and then we went from a roll on the freeway and i handed his *** to him. I think i'm going to use that extra 500 bucks to buy an apex power fc ( next pay check). Go 7's!!!!

Congtatulations!
Way to go Redhat778
You are obviously a good driver as it was a close race.
I think he was trying to back you down with that big $500 purse.
Thanks for taking the challenge and setting the record straight.
Did you just run once from a stop, or did he ask you to go again?
Was he cool about it or pissed off?

True story, a buddy (WS6 NHRA Ed.) and I were just having a go at a stoplight, and he took me until about 2nd gear. then I missed a shift (he nailed his with his Hurst 6spd). If it wasn't for that, I would've had him by maybe 1 inch. At 75 we were DEAD even... BTW, I'm at 5300 ft. elevation... This makes a HUGE difference in the performance of NA cars. (His would've smoked mine at sea level, I'm sure)

congrats
good luck with that power fc...yer all the way in GA and unless there is a tuner there with all the software...or you go get a wideband and datalogit...you will end up being a fish out of water.
you simply will not be able to tune by mail....read the pfc forums and the west forums and the vendor forums....you will see what I am talking about.
I wish you luck...if i were all the way down in ga and not able to head up to KD or other then I would go with the haltech so you can get some support tuning that thing. The majority of the dyno tuners here in LA can not tune with the pfc...only one can...I cant imagine how hard it must be to get tuning assistance out there. You can come close yourself..like I did...but its not going to be right unless your on the right software.
take care

I have raced a 00 ws6 stock and all I have is a straight pipe from the cat and a knn and I took him all the way from the start to 8o mph and then I slowed down and he never had me. I would race him for the money and get a good launch and you will see him in your mirrors.

my friend has a '98 LS-1 camaro. its pretty much a fancy z28...
even with work: full exhaust system (with full lenght headers, shorrty h pipe with high flow cats, new mufflers), SLP air box, ls-6 intake manifold, BBK throttlebody, wide as corvette rims, suspension work, and rear end gears...and his best time is a 13.83
on the SAME night my friend rand the 13.83 in his LS-1, i ran my 1994 touring FD, with only: silicone hoses, a boost gauge, aluminum radiator (no power adders!) and i pulled off a 13.86
if his car was stock, im sure you would beat him.
oh yah, my friends ls-1 is an automatic, and my FD is a 5 speed...

Im glad you won even though i have a camaro but i just want to make it clear to all of you guys the SS package really doesnt do ****, ive seen stock z28's dyno higher than stock ss's some of the engines are stronger than others. my camaro, heads/cam/headers/ls6 intake manifold and bolt ons made 405 RWHP and 386 RWTQ which is low for those mods...
