Unhappy Lower intake manifold removal & gas smell...

Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum (this is my first post). I just bought a 94 RX7. I got a good deal on it, because it has a few issues, but overall its in very nice shape. It has about 85K miles, and I don't know if its the original engine or not. I have two questions that hopefully someone can help me out with.

1. I can smell gas when I'm driving it with the windows and moonroof open, but only when I give it a lot of gas. I only seem to get the smell when I start to get on the boost. Otherwise, nothing. I've looked under the hood, and so far have never smelled any fuel when the car is idling, and can't see any evidence of leaking fuel. I did some searches on this forum, and found out the pulsation damper tends to fail and leak. Do you think this is the problem? Because I can only smell it when I give it a lot of gas, when I get into the boost.

2. I'm going to do the vacuum hose job in the next few weeks, and I'd also like to replace the lower intake manifold gasket while I'm in there, because I'm wondering if its blown and thats where my gas smell is coming from. From a few posts on here, it looks like I need to remove the turbos to remove the lower intake? From my shop manual, assuming I'm looking at it right, I don't have to touch the turbos, and its only a few more steps once I have the extension manifold removed. Which way is correct? If I have to remove the turbos, I probably won't do it.

Thanks,
Paul

DON'T DRIVE THE CAR!! If you smell gas get that fixed ASAP. Next time you drive it you might have an engine fire. It sounds like your injector O rings have gone out. Happened to me before. Get it changed or change them before you regret it. Smell down by the lower manifold and you should smell gas.

Changing the O rings are a pain but you better do it. No matter how much it cost you better do it before you no longer have a car.

It could be your O-rings or the Dampener. The dampener is most common to go like you were researching. If you pull off your upper intake manifold at least... you might be able to look down around the injectors and see a puddle of fuel. I didn't see anything until I shined a flashlight down in there, shook the engine so the puddle moved, and I saw the reflection moving. Better yet if you have the solenoid rack out for hose job purposes the fuel fix should be a no brainer. The dampener itself is like $130 so try and make sure that’s the problem before purchasing another. The easiest way to tell is not by looking at it but by pulling it off & blowing through it. Plug your finger on the other end and if its still leaking air, it’s bad.

Found leak! (I think)

Well, I finally got all the crap taken off to get at the fuel injectors... and guess what I found! The O-ring on the rear primary injector was completely mangled! I looks like someone took it apart before, and o-ring didn't seat completely and probably stuck out some. I've also found a couple bolts missing from other mechanics. My alternator belt adjusting bolt isn't even there! Oh well... I'm learning a lot about the engine, and the crazy vacuum hose system.

When you guys say to be very careful with the brittle plastic, you're not kidding! Everything under my extension manifold is as hard as a rock, and I already broke a plastic nipple off of a valve attached to the ACV. Has anyone ever tried to glue these back on, or is that a stupid idea?

Thanks for your help. This forum is a life saver.
