Low fuel rev limiter?
I was riding out the last of my tank yesterday. As soon as I got the needle on E, the car wouldn't let me go past 5,000 while in gear. If put in neutral, I could rev as much as I wanted. I put 20 bucks in and then it had no problem getting up to and past red line in gear. Any explainations?
Low fuel level.
The fuel pump switches to high speed when under heavy load. When the tank is nearly empty there is a very shallow puddle of fuel near the fuel pickup. The pump switches to high speed and drinks fuel much more quickly, immediately drinking up the fuel right around the pickup. This starves the pickup and the engine falls on its face.

What I'd like an explanation for is why you would do such a thing and risk fuel pickup problems that might blow your motor .

I gassed on it once and after it wouldn't go higher in RPMs, I let off of it completely. This was purely for MPG testing, it's not like I was gunning it everywhere. And thank you DamonB for the actual answer.
