Low End Torque
I have a 3rd Gen Automatic Trans with M2 Downpipe, M2 Cat Back and R/B Intake, K&N filter. Car runs great with 10-8-9 boost pattern.
Has anyone come up with a solution for the bottom end torque problem with the rotary?
The car is very quick after it's up on boost, but off the line, it takes a moment before you get thrown back in the seat. Some people suggested converting to a 5 speed, but all that will give me is more speed of the line. Once I'm on boost, the Automatic will shift faster than most 5 speed racers can so I'm not convinced about converting to a manual.
A performance trans shop told me about this switch they can add to my trans which will balance pressures in forward and reverse simultaneously (effectively creating a 'line lock' switch). I get the engine up on boost and drop the switch and I'm off on full boost off the line. The only problem with that is I have to be at a full stop and of course be ready to drop the switch.
I want a solution where I put the pedal to the floor and the car launches. Is this possible with an Automatic Rotary (Without going to a 3 rotor config)?
Thanks everyone

If you want allot more squirt off the line then change your rear end gears from the 3.90 to a 4.30. It’s cheaper and easer then a 5 speed conversion. After that you’ll have to have a custom stall converter made to get more off the line get up and go.

can you do a stall converter in an ATX FD? I know my friend's MKIV (with a single turbo) has one for like 3500 or 4000 RPMS...basically, you press the pedal down and it shoots up to the stall limit really quickly, offering almost instant boost. However, this only works on ATX, and probably isn't too gentle on it. Anyway, I have no idea if this works for FDs...but it's a place to look

I hadn't considered a gear change, what kind of $$$ does the ring & pinion go for? What about setup of the gears?
The high stall speed convertor may also be an option. I was told by a shop that builds race transmissions that for $2,600 I could upgrade my torque convertor to a 3500 stall speed, put in different discs for stronger bite, and the 'neutral lock' switch. He said I would eat any 5 speed comparable car because the A/T offers so many advantages. Hmmmm...Sounds great, but I don't see a lot of people who've done it.
Help!!! What do I do?

Change to diff gears. I have 4.77 gears in my 3rd and I can tell you on the Pro-Solo racing nobody can take off as fast as my Spank.
73 mph in 2nd with 335/40/17 tires.
If you want to take off, go the gears, you will lose some top end however how often do you think you will use the top end on your car? And how often will you be accelerating?
I can tell you with these gears I was still fast enough to out run a brand new YZF 600 R Yamaha, and I had to shift into 5th and was doing over 150 before I started to pull the bike.
Good luck.

gears
the lock that you re refering to is a trans brake they use them in dragracing all tha time if you put a real small gear in it like a 4.77 or whatever ya it will make your takeoff great but hope you dont plan on racing on the highway cuz putting a smaller gear in will lower your max speeds majorly a trans brake is just liek having a clutch and when you let go of the button its like dumping it its badass if you plan on having your car up to tha same speeds it goes now you should get a brake.....Does anyone else in here have a trans brake??? i have one on my dragcar get ahold of me on aim if you wanna know more
