Not realted to the FD, but if they were doing that, all the hogs and sport bikes would be getting pulled over ALL the time. I've got a F4 with an aftermarket exhaust, it isn't nearly as loud or obnoxious as some of the others, but it is definetly loud. I have had no problems..

There are legislations coming into certain states and town/cities in regards to exhaust sound levels, but as of yet there aren't any federal mandated regulations and fines..

To be on the safe side, just let go off the throtle when cops are near by.
Cops seems like to write tickets to modiffied cool looking cars.

One of the mags...was it Sport Compact Car?...has had a couple editorials on the situation out in CA (California). CA typically leads the way for dumb-*** laws. The last I read CA police/the car owner have to prove that the car is over/under the limit (I think 98 dB). Not on the spot because they don't have the portable testing equipment available yet. The CA cops can still write a ticket, but I think that the way the law is there it would be relatively easy to get it thrown out in court. The guys from CA on the board probably have some first hand experience.

I haven't got pulled for my Apex GT exhaust yet, but I only run without the silencer about 50% of the time. If I see a cop, I usually take it easy on the gas. Idle and motoring about is not too loud. If I did WOT past a cop they would pull me over for sure. I don't know what they can do about it here, but I am sure they would at least give me a lot of grief.

Hey all...

Well, I have a friend that's got an NSX with an aftermarket exhaust on it, and though I can't personally compare it to anything on the RX-7 side (like the N1's), I can say it's pretty loud. He was pulled over not too long ago and I'd have to say that one of the factors was his exhaust. The cops were total ********, pulled him over with guns drawn, etc., and cited him for reckless driving (even though they didn't state any excessive speed or anything...total BS cop ego crap ). His NSX isn't particularly modded...it's lowered, with volk TE-37's, and that's the only cosmetic mods, so it looks pretty much stock. My only thinking is that the cops heard his car and it sounded like it was going fast and they decided to pull him over and f*ck him over.

PS: For any of you who are cops, don't be a dick, because you'll only end up getting it back worse from the folks you're supposed to be "protecting"

I did an article with Super Street Magazine and California Highway Patrol about legally modifying your vehicle (oct '01 issue). It was a general article where they took a show car, a high performance car (mine) and a semi modded street car.

I had a long discussion with the officer and the CHP supervisior about cars in general.

It is true that they do not have portable sound meters to measure the Db level of an exhaust so they can't really give you an exhaust ticket but they can do other things. Officers know that there are many street legal exhaut that fall below legal Bd range BUT not with a header or other modifications. They'll write you a ticket and make you go to CHP so that they can find other things wrong with your car. The CHP is getting alot smarter now days.

The CHP officer i talked to was one of 5 officers who give seminars and classes to the rest of CHP. This guy knew everything! He looked at my car and said "hey this should be twin turbo and I know that there are no CARB approved single tubo kits for the 3rd gen Rx7."

This officer knew brand names, what the usual (honda) mods were etc. He sits at home and at the office and surfs the net looking for the newest fads and trends. He told me about a couple of canyon runs they busted by finding about it on the web.

It gets worse every damn year....new smog laws and crap like this

Fricking unbelievable. I can't believe the CHP is getting that serious. I just hope that it takes a long time to make it to the East coast.

Maybe they should spend that much time on more substantial offenses, drugs, murder, robbery, etc.???

Screw CARB, the EPA and others that don't understand the big picture with pollution. How many miles is an average FD driven per year compared to your average Expedition (or other gas-sucking, mondo-polluting SUV or big *** vehicle)? Sucks *** that performance/modified cars are singled out.

I got pulled over for speeding because the cop said it "sounded" like I was going too fast. No radar, no pacing, no nothing. Just his "judgement".

This is my personal opinion. Cops are ******** on an ego trip, and when they see a nice car that they can't have, they get jelious, but when they see a young guy driving it, they get mad. When this happens it clouds their judgement and stupid **** happens. I love my RX-7, but I hate being singled out! My exhaust is somewhat loud, but not as loud as my neighbors Harley, who sometimes comes home late at night and wakes everyone up. Do the police pull him over, no, cuz it's stock, WTF!! What if my car came with rocket launchers from the factory, would that be ok?! God, it works me up!

Interestingly enough, one of the Rx-7's I test drove in December was owned by a cop. He barely let me give the car a test, even in an empty parking lot. Sometimes you have to wonder.

In the DC area there don't seem to be many traffic cops, and rarely if ever do they set up speed traps. I guess traffic is so bad that they have been ordered not to **** around. Even so, at the end of the month you always have to watch it.

Kind of makes me glad to have a dull color like Montego Blue.
