Question Looking For Series 7 ('96-'99) Trim Info

Hey everyone so I`m looking to import a Series 7 rx7 from japan pretty soon and I`m confused with all the different trim levels. I`ve tried searching all over but I can`t find any good info, I`ve found plenty of stuff on the series 8 and series 6 but nothing on 7. If somebody could help me out that would be great. Specifically I`m looking for the differences between the following models:
  • Type RB
  • Type RS
  • Type RZ
  • Type R

hey!!
heres a link that may help you , i always used to use this site when looking up rx7s to see the difference between them and what to look for , from the RB to the R theres not much difference all i can see on some of the stock models are the seats, steering wheels and gauges are different .

its very hard to find a used unmodified rx7 from japan, especially interior wise but this should help just copy and paste it , hope this helps a bit i believe you have to select the make and year of the car at the top left corner

Around 96 I believe the ECU changed to 16-bit processing power, the ABS changed from 3 channel to proper 4 channel, and the 'rats nest' under the manifold became a solid block of plastic, with valves and chambers all integrated into it- the 'plastic pumpkin'.

Also, the RZ 'whale tail' rear spoiler was available, and in 1999 the more common shark-fin rear spoiler became available.
RZ, RS & RB (I think) could have the black gauge bezels, instead of the usual chrome (I have this in my car)
Overall people may want the 99 series 8 the most, but the series 7 is still a very good car, nicer than the series 6 in my opinion.

I have been building/converting mine to Series 7 replica for a year now, because I dont want to follow the trend towards Series 8 replicas. I want something a bit different, as not many Series 7's were produced compared to 6 + 8.

I have owned one of each, and still have some JDM 6/7 & 8 cars as parts shells in the shop. The later versions were that little bit nicer. Interior trim changed from smooth black gummy finish to hard black grained plastic, dark grey inserts, etc.

So the drivetrain is the same across all models right? I've read in some places that the RZ models (and no other models) come with recaro seats? Is this the case? And maybe a little bit lighter?

I know of this guy who paid 120k for a type RZ rx7, so I figure there must be something thats better about them.

120k for a Type RZ? Wow this guy got screwed big time.

All models have the same drivetrain and engine. The only differences are the suspension, the breaks ( size 17" for all RS and RZ), the seats and wheels. I don't believe there is any weight difference between the models.

The spirit R model also came with the recaro seats.

The guy actually imports cars from japan. Not sure what the deal is, he said that only ~150 Type RZs were made or something... Here's the thread from reddit if anybody cares:

reddit crazy-ness

So just to be clear the type RZ does not come with recaros or does? I do want recaro seats, I'll probably buy some if the car doesn't come with them stock so it would be nice to have them included.

The type RZ does come with the recaros...but some dealers tend to remove them and put in standard seats as they can get more money if they sell them separately.

The type RZ is definately not worth 120K. In fact no rx7 model is worth 120k...maybe he was talking about indian rupees??

basically yes. the 92-95 cars, were all the same thru all the markets, except the US got the precat, AWS and EGR.

in 96, Mazda upgraded the y pipe and IC ducting. the ECU got smarter. the thermostat housing becomes 1 piece instead of having the separate filler cap adapter. the fuel and coolant recalls were applied to the production cars (this actually happened late 95)

in late 1998, they upgraded to the 99 style, it got different metering orifices in the rotor housings, a yet again smarter ECU, the black box solenoid arrangement (it might have happened earlier, i'd have to double check this), revised ducting for the IC and airbox, so they don't share. the bumper is redesigned to aid cooling, the radiator fin count is denser. the 280hp version gets different turbos, a bigger downpipe, and less restrictive muffler.

the trans is the same although, i think the US got a taller overdrive, and then the OD and final drive change if its a 16" wheel car or 17" wheel car.
