Question looking for quietest airbox/intake

thought about doing a POLL but Ill see how this here works.

I bought a 93 touring with a pettit "cold air intake" what a piece of crap!
The BOVs exhaust to atmosphere and are very loud also there is a lot of turbo noise. I don't mind the turbo noise, the BOVs I hate.
I also know there are much better ways to get "real" cold air. After reading "lightening in world of thunder" on intakes. I’m left wondering Is there a good quiet intake out there.
No one seems to comment much on noise. Like I said Turbo I don't mind much, It's the air pump and BOVs I want to tone down.

Im thinking of modifying a stock one or fabbing my own. If yours is quiet how is everything plumbed. Are there filters on all of the hoses? what is your box made of?

Also if you have any pictures please post them.
Thanks

the QUITEST setup would be a modified STOCK Box or a Closed box like M2s

I will be posting pic's of my modified box soon

insn't having the BOV vent to atmosphere a good thing? i thought it messed up the airflow if it didn't.
but yeah the air pump is loud and irritating w/the pettit intake.

Modified Stock Air Box

The modified stock air box is no louder than an unmodified stock air box. I'm really impressed with what has been done by others to modify the stock air box. Here is a link to some pictures posted not long ago by member wickedrix:

http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/wicke...rc=bc%26.view=l

You may not want to do the modification exactly like this person did, but at least now you can grasp the concept and come up with your own design. That's what I did plus I added a K&N filter. My modified box works fine and I'm very happy with it.

However, I'm starting to think about upgrading my stock SMIC to something bigger on the order of an M2 medium SMIC which will not fit with the stock air box. I'm not interested in paying $500 for an M2 CAI. For those of you who have faced this situation, what do you recommend?

even if you get the M2 box your still going to here the bov go off. right now i have the stock bov connected to the m2 box. trust me you'll be able to here it. only option i see is to just get a k&n drop in filter and use the stock air box.

I've got an N-tech intake. It functions very similarly to the Pettit in that you can hear the BOV. Nick used to sell a silencer kit for it. Basically, instead of running the BOV line to the intake & have it release pressure there, it releases in the silencer (basically a muffler). I haven't put mine on yet. I bought it used with the intake but ran out of daylight when installing it.

I have an ARC box

Everything is plumbed into it, just like the stock box, but the fitting for the aipump is plugged. I't a pretty nice unit, made of aluminum, but I'm going SMIC so it won't fit since it's too wide. If anyone wants it shoot me an e-mail:
mike@ucsbalum.com
For the slimmer airbox I'm fabricating one similar to the M2 box, but with a rounded top, more filter space (1 big filter), and It should be a lot cheaper to sell. If anyone is interested it should be done in about a month...

I was thinking about making an M2 style airbox and coating the inside with insulation/sound deadening for the noise. I was thinking something like dynamat. I suppose this would also help with heat soak in traffic. but It'll also negate the weight gains from aluminum.

So based on the replies so far the best way to silence the BOVs is Stock airbox.?

Where does the RX7 Fashon box get it's fresh air?
How many filters are in that box? How do the BOV's plum into it? Do they each just connect in the side and vent into the box freely or is there a muffler for them. What about the airpump. does it have any thing to silence it's operation?
Thanks

Fresh air comes from between the slot by the radiator (like other boxes)
Comes with two k&N's.. like other box filters..
BOV's plug into the box like other box filters..
Air pump plugs in also...

You can still hear the BOV's...but it's not loud. My airpump doesn't make any noisen at all....

Why are you so concerned about noise...? Is it the moo/farts that you are worried about... because that is not a BOV/Airpump issue. Hell I hear the BOV's on a stock airbox...

Actually I'm thinking of selling my M2 airbox and go with Apex-i intake.

The MOOs are an AIRPUMP issue. they are caused by the AirPump Bypass Air discharge! when I pull the Bypass air discharge hose (the infamous HOSE TO NOWERE) off my stock Airbox I get a bad case of the MOOs - The only reason MAZDA put that hose there was to cure the MOOs - a late change in AirPump plumbing/operation caused the Bypass air discharge muffler chamber to emmit loud MOOing sounds that were cured by adding a length of hose to the discharge port. (a much less expensive solution than designing a new Airbox)

Yes I know that...but it's not actually something connected to the airpump itself...is really what I meant...I'm trying to get an idea of what he is looking for...I personally dont think the stock BOV's are that loud with any intake...so I'm totally guessing maybe he has the case of the moos and that is what he is worried about...so the fact that the airpump is connected to the CAi...will have nothing to do with the moo...know if the "hose to nowhere" is connected to the box..that's a different story.

Actually, the BOV with my n-tech is pretty loud without the silencer... It literally just blows off to the atmosphere.
