long rides make your back hurt?

i just read that old thread about driver height and what size guys can fit into an FD and a lot of people of all different heights mentioned that their back hurts on long drives. Ive experienced the same thing on drives longer than an hour or so. What ive found that really helps me is to take a small towel or something, fold it so its an inch or two thick and put it in the niche of the seat where the seat bottom meets the backrest so that you end up sitting on top of it and it's just below your buttbone (tail bone). For some reason, that helped me immensely. Just throwing this out there in case it helps anyone.

I rode in mine for about 8 hours the first day I got it. The only thing that hurt after all that time was my *** (wallet not in a good spot).

Hmm. I'm about 5'8, 145lb and my R1 is the single most comfortable car I've ever driven. The 1000+ mile drive back from Arkansas (where I bought the car) was actually quite therapeutic.

My car has low miles, so maybe the seats are less worn?

Oh yeah, I forgot, I always take my wallet out and put it in the arm-rest on the door.

I guess it is a touring seat thing... I got rid of mine and put in some wider ones... when I had to do long drives w/ the stock seats... I sat on a feather pillow

I am 6'4" and am comfortable until I take long trips (1.5 hours+). The seat somehow catches my right leg on the outside just under my butt that my knee and *** painfully fall asleep. Even with the cruise on I still have to keep my legs bent as there is not enough room to truly stretch out. I have tried every position I can think of and have yet to find a solution.

The single best thing you can ever do is take your wallet out and put it somewhere so nothing is in your back pocket.

Try taking your wallet out of your back pocket. This works wonders for me on long trips over 200 miles.

I never have anything in my back pockets anytime I am in the car. Maybe I just have a poorly shaped backside

I have a degree in human Factors engineering and currently work as an ergonomist for the Army....but I am too lazy to type a diatribe on the issue

Basically, the wallet pushes on the psyatic nerve and can cause discomfort, not to mention just a simple dimle in your *** muscle over time is uncomfortable. The seat is designed more for side support than back support, (needs lumbar support). Obviously we all know things are designed according to population averages, and I would guess LARacer (5-8, 145) feels fine in the car because he is pretty close to the Japanese equivalent of the 5th-95th percentile male.

blahhh, Ok I am done

I drove my car 900 miles to get home when I bought it. I have a bad lower back, and usually find long drives very difficult. I found the seats to be very supportive and comfortable.

I never sit on my wallet.

The wallet helps quite a bit but for trips for 2 hours and on a break is about all you can do. I drove mine non stop from North Carolina. Wow what a drive that kills your legs.

I'm 5'6" ~165lbs and I always drive my FD with the wallet behind my ***, and it works just fine with me. I think it may help a lil bit if you have the back tilted back just a little bit, I dunno....... But it's a damn comfortable leather seat, not to boney, not too plushy either......

I would have guessed that 5-6" would be the Japanese male equivalent of the 5th-95th percentile. I'm Korean, I think we are close to the Japanese in terms of average height.

I'm 6'0" 255lbs and I think my RX7 is one of the most comfortable cars I've been in. Tops is my sister's Lexus RX330...

We all have different torso/leg length ratio and arm length/reach. Putting a new steering wheel w spacers to get my optimum reach while being able to reach the pedals comfortably helped me a lot. And I never drive w my wallet on the back pocket. Otherwise I find my seats very comfortable over long drives >2hrs.

Ummm, I thought that was the Sciatic nerve. Was for me in A & P....

I've found it helps to twist in the seat every 100 miles on ling trips to relieve the bursae in near the spine (the "popping" noise you hear). I just grab the steering wheel and shove around. Scares hell outta the g/f at 80!! Six foot, 170 lbs, fit's like a glove. Interestingly, the g/f is around 5'6", and dislikes the pass seat. I've noticed it is much harder than my seat (duh!) and it pushes her shoulders forward, forcing her to slump. We've taken to a towel in the upper back rest area for her, and this helps. Now if she could only get over the "sweaty gym sock smell" syndrome

I'm 6', 200lbs and I can sit in that car (Touring) forever without getting the least bit uncomfortable. My girlfriend, 5'0" 110lbs, fits fine too.

casheirs to asheville passenger side, wasn't too long of a drive, and the R1 seats felt great to me, being 5,10 150 pounds.

My R1 is THE most comfortable car I've ever owned/driven. It feels like I'm in the seat rather than sitting on it.

I have yet to take it on a 4+ solid drive, but my work requires me to drive a bunch of short distances every day, and I love those seats.

Especially the way they recline, feels like the hinge is above where all other cars move back and forward. Hard to explain.
