a little help with my fd
ok so i just bought my fd and im really enjoying it. but i took it to get a tune today and they couldent finnish because they said the fuel filter clogged but the car runs fine its just at 5k rpm it get a break up and it back fires. i was wondering if it could be something else because in third gear the car will go up to 6500rpm with no problems.

And you have done the usual like new spark plugs? It's possible that the fuel filter could be the issue, but this is not one of those "exact" things someone can tell you over the internet. This is one of those you need to get dirty and start eliminating things which "aren't" the problem.

well had new plugs put in yesterday. and i added fuel cleaner when i put gas today and it got better and spuddered a lot less and i could actually hit some boost with little problems in all gears.

Replacing the fuel filter is cheap insurance. You don't want to starve your engine of fuel causing a lean mixture. Just do it.
It also could be ignition break-up. But I'm not any good with how to diagnose that. I just replaced my coils with new used ones, a new ignition harness, and new spark plugs. I saw you already replaced the plugs, so you might wanna check the rest.

If you're going to get a tune, I'd swap out your injectors, fuel filter, spark plugs, oil/oil filter, and possibly a new intake filter. If you tune your car when it has shitty parts in it, you're not going to maximize your potential when you DO change those parts. You're basically hitting a ceiling.
These parts aren't very expensive, and are maintenance things you should do anyway. If anyone else has any suggestions...

I agree. It's possible it's the fuel filter but without doing the maintenance stuff and knowing where the car really stands, it's not something that has 1 solution. It could be any of the normal wear and tear items ... a combination... or none of the above.

all the mods have about 4k miles on them so they are fairly new. one guy at the rx7store said it could just be ignition breakup. from the jacobs ignition.

I'm having bad ignition breakup at high rpms, so I'll be installing an HKS Twin Power tomorrow. I'll let you know my results. Unfortunately, I just put my new clutch in this morning, so it's going to take me several weeks before I can WOT...
