I'm in the middle of a rebuild and I am currently soaking my housings, irons, and rotors in paint thinner. The carbon build up is pretty damn nasty on the rotors and the paint thinner just isn't cutting it. It seemed to work well on the housings, but not so much on the rotors.

I searched on this topic and saw some people used simple green and carb cleaner, but I don't know if thats going to do the job or not.

I need some real nasty stuff here that can cut through the carbon without damaging the rotor bearings.

Also is it worth cleaning out the coolant passages? I made sure to get all the bulky stuff out of there, but the passages are still orange.

Carb cleaner and a razor blade should work well unless your rotors are really carbon'ed up.

Re: the rotor bearings, how many miles on them? They don't need replacing?

Re: the coolant passages, as long as they are clean of debris I wouldnt' worry about the orange discoloration, that's normal.

well i know for sure one of my rotor bearing needs replacing, either way i'll probably end up doing both. So i guess I shouldn't be that worried about them. And yes they are reaaally carboned up. My motor was actually carbon locked. You can see pictures at the bottom of this thread.

when i come to haul the engine outta my fd, i going to port, seals, and bearings and makes sure allllll is clean beofre going back together lol

but hopefully im a long way off with neluck another year! lol

what brand of gas and oil where you using? Thats the worst carbon build I have ever seen.. Even my old S5 N/A motor with 170k had far less..

And as GoodfellaFD3s said,.. carb cleaner and a razor blade works wonders.

well i didn't drive the car very long before I took it town for mods and rebuilding. So I don't know what the previous owner used. It is obvious though, it was not properly maintained. Of course that will all change now.

Yes that is by far the worst carbon build up i've ever seen as well.
