lightweight flywheel worthit?

I will have to replace my clutch soon and was thinking of having Petit install the aluminum flywheel which weighs like 8.5 lbs. they say it makes a big difference in acceleration. Does anyone have any experience with it and is it streetable? I have heard that it is a real pain in the *** to drive a light flywheel car in traffic.

I have heard that it stinks in traffic cause you have to rev the car up higher when you are moving. Puts alittle more stress on the clutch too. I am about to order one cause I hear that they are great for street racing. revs much quicker

I upgraded to the ACT street/strip/9.5 lb SR package and am very happy, but like many other mods there are tradeoffs. It is much easier to bog, and the clutch is harder to modulate, but I think the added "jump" in lower gears and the improved ability to match revs makes it worth it in the end.

just a quick question, how much is Pettit charging you to put in the clutch. I have put every part in my car, but I heard the clutch is a real bitch.

I'll have to echo what CCarlisi said...I also have the SR 9.5 pound flywheel and ACT clutch. It makes a noticeable difference in acceleration in 1st and 2nd gears. It does take a little bit more effort to drive it, but I got used to it really quickly. I have no problem driving it in stop and go freeway congestion, and I have driven it on the hilly streets in San Francisco several times without a problem. I've never stalled it in the year or so I've had it.

Noticeable difference in acceleration on 1st and 2nd, 3rd to a lesser degree. You do have to slip the clutch a little on hills. Ditto on taking more effort to drive but it is the most kick for the dollar I've spent yet.

PS - I think the RB flywheel is cheaper.

Not really much of a bitch...

...If you have an OS Giken clutch that is.

For those of you who don't know...the OS comes with equipment to turn your PULL type clutch into a PUSH type clutch...I can just yank my transmission right off...no worries

So how long, how hard of install was it? Oh and what flywheel are you running wiht your OS clutch?

You're the first person I've ever heard say that.

Best mod I've ever done. Driveability wasn't affected at all. As far as all of the benefits, I agree with what the other guys have said

I think it rocks. I got mine together with lots of other mods so it's hard to isolate exactly the impact it added but I'm pretty pleased.

Very noticeable in 1st and 2nd gears.

well Im gonna go with ACT street/strip clutch. What weight flywheel should I get. I want performance but nothing thats totally undrivable. Oh and I will be going single down the road.

I have the clutch with the 8.5 lbs flywheel. I've only had it back for maybe now 500 miles (Odometer went about 2k back) but it's definitley "drivable".

Not sure what the 'best' clutch would be. My setup seems just fine so far but I've been easy on it.

The lighter the better for accleration, but if you're gonna be drag racing, you'll actually see slower ETs. You need the momentum of the heavy stock flywheel to keep revs up. The power exists in the upper revs, so higher revs more power. In between shifts, the lightened flywheel will drop revs, thus slowing you down a bit. I have a lightened fly, and i'm still getting used to it after 2 years. But it's maybe cuz my clutch sucks. I have the RPS turbo clutch.

OS Giken comes with it's own flywheel(light weight). It's complete clutch assembly...clutch, two pressure disks, flywheel...Installation normally takes the same amount of time as any other clutch...BUT you do have to add some stuff to the transmission, i.e. change out the clutch fork, throw out bearing. The complete OS kit comes with all of this.

I'll agree with DeNguyen. I got the SR 8.5lb flywheel and ACT clutch combo. I did my research before buying and I expected huge differences based on some of the scare stories I read, but it's really pretty subtle in my opinion. 1st and 2nd gear acceleration were improved enough that you could feel it. But blipping the gas wasn't as radically improved as I would have hoped based on my piston-engined experiences. Still, it's something that's definitely worth doing if you can afford it. And don't let anyone scare you about it being hard to start from a stop or start on a hill or whatever. I promise you won't even notice after a week!

hmmm...well the rebuild kit costs almost $700 brand new. But the Whole OS Giken twin plate clutch/flywheel costs in the neighborhood of $1200. A little bit price, but it's definitely the most streetable clutch and holds as good if not more than the ACT extreme or the other major brands.

You won't see higher ET's with a light flywheel unless you are bogging. You'll probably be faster since it takes less power to change the inertia of the lighter flywheel. I remember seeing a post several months back where some testing was done and you could expect to see 25-35 hp increase using a light flywheel dependent on what gear you are in. When comparing 9 - 12 lb flywheel, you really need to know how the weight is distributed since the inertia is what you are interested in. The less weight around the outside of the flywheel the better.
