The stock flywheel comes in around 20lbs. When you lightgen it significantly, your top end acceleration gains are bigger, but you compromise a little low end to get initial ennertia rolling. Ive had it so long, I have become accustomed to it now, but you will feel the difference. One of the best mods I did to my FD. Obviously the lighter it gets, the above condition increases. Make sure you have right counter weight.

The stock flywheel is 27lbs if i remember right...If you already have a lightened flywheel, I wouldnt put another one in. It wouldnt be worth the work to get the tranny off and whatnot or the cost of a new flywheel.

Yes, depending on what you are using the vehicle for, a lightened flywheel increases RPM spin rate, but as level7 said, the heavier flywheel gives you a better lauch (i.e. drag racing) from the interia gained by a heavier spinning object. Great thing about a lighened flywheel is that most of them have a replaceable friction surface, while the stock and many aftermarket flywheels that are heavier do not have replaceable friction surfaces, you must replace the entire flywheel. Counterweights are very important when installing the lightened flywheel, if you get the wrong one, say the one for a second gen, when the motor revs, it will shake horribly and vibrate the entire car. So be sure to specify what model year when ordering the flywheel.

I agree with level7, definitely one of the best mods. I have the XACT Prolite 9.5 lbs flywheel, and you can really feel a difference when revving. Launching is not a problem, in fact I haven't witnessed any cons, though my motor is far more stout than the stock powerplant. However, I do have to slip the clutch (ACT heavy/street) a fraction of a second longer when casually starting from a stop which could lead to accelerated wear on the clutch, but not significantly.

The RB steel flywheel has roughly half the rotational inertia of the stock flywheel (which what you feel), even though it is only a few pounds lighter. I doubt switching to a super-light one would be worth the trouble/expense. And I say that even though I am a fan of the really light flywheels.

Unless the lighter one was availble for no cost to you (trade for your steel flywheel, already have the lighter one, etc.), I wouldn't bother.

Steel flywheels have the advantage of being less likely to shatter. So your current flywheel is not devoid of advantages over the lighter ones. Hope that helps if you are just looking for a reason.
