Lightweight Flywheel with OEM Clutch ok?

I am considering upgrading to a lightweight aluminum flywheel when I rebuild my motor in a month. Will it be ok to use the lighter flywheel with the OEM clutch? My OEM clutch only has about 3K miles so I don't feel like spending another $400+ for another clutch.

Is anybody out there running a lightweight flywheel and stock clutch without problems?

Yes, that combination would be fine.

Yup, the stock clutch will be fine. Although, if you're making > 300RWHP, I'd go ahead and bite the bullet on the clutch. You're already in there .... might as well do it now, instead of having to drop the tranny again.

Yes, works just fine for the last 2 years. That's what I run because I wanted the stock engagement while I got used to the reduced intertia of the aluminum flywheel. RB told me the stock clutch is good for probably 100 hp more than stock so I went with their recommendation.

Should be good for 100 more? I've got intake, dp, high flow, cat back, and pfc. High boost @ 13psi. My clutch burned on my 4th highway pull

Thanks for the responses guys. The official word from Racing Beat is positive too....

The flywheel is compatible with this, or almost any aftermarket street and/or pressure plate. IF you are increasing the power output of your car you may want to consider upgrading your clutch disc and pressure plate.

OEM not good after 4 pulls?

I've got all of that except the PFC and I've drag raced it a couple of time + beat it on the street and the highway regularly for 2+ years. I also run 13psi. Hooks up just fine. I installed my new OEM clutch and pressure plate at the same time as the aluminum flywheel. The clutch materials have been upgraded by Mazda over the years. You now get what is essentially the j-spec parts if you get a new OEM one.

My stock clutch burned (63k miles) in 4th and 5th after I put the dp on... Mods were just a dp, catback, and torque brace if that did anything. I've ordered a clutch/flywheel combo from Jason, but they are backordered from ACT right now, so it didn't go in this Saturday as planned. If I had my own shop, I would like to try the lightweight flywheel with the OEM clutch to play with that lighter engagement feel. I imagine you would be less likely to burn a clutch powershifting with a lightweight flywheel, but my clutch is slipping under 3rd, 4th and 5th at WOT. The hold loss isn't noticeably unless it really goes or if I miss shift into 5th from 2nd, but things feel like butter in the car compared to how they did 10k ago. I watched it last night and I noticed fluctuations in the rpms as they climbed-slower than usual too. I can't wait to get that new clutch in, but then again, I wish I could get used to the flywheel before having to deal with a heavier clutch.
