Lighting for White Face Gauge

I am looking to hook up my white face gauge red positive wire to my headlight on. Can anyone tell me which wire to tap into? I am looking to have the gauges light up only when the headlights are on.

Tap into the wires that run to the light in the ashtray. Pull up on the center console and you will see it. Make sure to use both the 12V and the Ground if you want the gauges to dim with your dimmer switch.

if your gauge has one ground wire then DO NOT use the ashtray ground. the ashtray ground is a PWM signal for dimming the interior lights and it will affect the accuracy of your gauge. you must ground the gauge to the body of the car or a real ground wire. if your gauge has 2 ground one for the light and one for the electronics only then you may use the ashtray ground. the side effect of all this is that your gauge will not dim according to the interior dimming controls. if this is a problem then you can put a variable resistor on the gauges positive lighting lead and set it how you want.

He wants it so that they light up with the headlights, not the parking lights.

You'd have to hook it to the ground on the headlamp relay to get them to do what you're looking for. That I believe is under the hood.

oh youre right i didnt even read it. tap into the large plug that is right under the steering column. there are about 5 wires on the top of the plug that are larger than the others. i think either the white/blue or white/green should work. just do some testing to find out for sure.

Wait a second here. Is he installing a white faced boost gauge, temp gauge? Or a white faced gauge face replacement? Another question is why would you want your gauge to only turn on when you lights are on? Usually the gauge has a 12V wire for constant, one that is switched to the ignition, and an illumination wire.

Installing the white face gauge replacement. I'm getting confused here. There's no sense having them light up blue during the day because you can't see it. So, I just need it to light up when the headlights are on. I only have 1 positive and 1 negative wire to connect. I guess coming on with the parking lights would be fine too since I only use them at night.

Then go ahead and use the wires that power the ash tray light. If you want your gauge faces to dim with the other dash lights use the ground for the ash tray also. If you want to control them separately then just use the 12V wire to the ash tray.
