light backfire/misfire around the main cat and downpipe

i'm hearing a light backfire/misfire around the middle of the car. i think it's around the main cat or downpipe area, nothing in the muffler area. i just noticed it tonight for the first time after driving home (with a bit of ~spirit~ here and there). i stopped in front of my house and let the car cool down with the hood up and there it was. any ideas of why this would start all of a sudden?

info that 'might' help:
- spark plugs changed back in late january
- car driven less than 6k miles since plugs were changed
- not sure when the spark plugs wires were changed tho
- fuel filter changed at the end of june
- oil changed less than 500 miles ago, i just switched from mobil1 15w50 to 10w30

thanks for any help you can come up with guys

So its backfiring at idle? Or are you getting backfire between shifts at higher rmps on boost?

it was at idle cooling down in front of my house. i would hear one light backfire between every 15-60 secs.
i didn't notice it when i was driving.

I would half to agree with jon88se. Check the tourq on your down pipe. All that exhaust needs to lite off is some oxygen and heat. you have one of those with the extreame temps of the rotory motor.

hmm guess i'll check the 'downpipe-to-cat' bolts and the 'cat-to-muffler connector pipe' bolts. i'm pretty sure it wasn't the turbo side of the downpipe cause it seemed like it was right below the center console or passenger seat. my right leg felt a little more heat than usual that night too.
