Lets talk oil filter pedestals / adapters

Hello everyone, I want to plumb my Defi oil temp sender. I have been doing research and the way i want to do it is near the oil filter by way of aftermarket pedestal.

So my options are the REspeed one which i can not get and there is no ETA when they will be available(if ever). Every other reference to pedestals i can find on the forums no longer exist. Are there anymore MFG of aftermarket pedestals im not aware of? This is how i REALLY want to do it.

This leads me to option 2, which im not totally against, if it can work well.....the sandwich plate. There seems to be a few choices but im concerned about clearance issues. Greddy, Racing Beat, Mazdatrix(looks like the RB one) to name a few options. Who is running a sandwich plate for oil temp senders?... which kind, do u have clearance problems, and trouble changing the filter?

Other methods i have found, considered and choose NOT to use...relocation of the filter, banjo bolt tap, oil pan plug, and Howard Colemans oil level method. Lets just focus on the filter area

I look forward to hearing from everyone. Thank you.

i use a sandwich that i got from ebay a couple years ago...no problems at all, 5 minutes installation and not causing clearance issue on the TB elbow when changing the oil filter.

I use an oil pan drain with 1/8 npt port and put my temp sensor there. Do NOT buy a brass one, they can't take the on-off torque cycles when changing the oil and will break (I broke 2). A steel one works fine.

Glowshift sandwhich plate. I've used them on my fd, supras, g35's, and 350z's. Never had a problem. You can even get them with two ports. One for pressure and one for temp.

Glowshift is less expensive than the others. I may pick one up to move my project forward until REspeed makes with the goods

Thanks for the feedback guys.

You can drill and tap the large banjo bolt like I did when I relocated my pedestal for my 20b project.
There's more than enough metal in the bolt to do this. In the below pics I actually installed my oil pressure sender in the actual banjo bolt. You could do the same with the oil temp sender.

Edit: I still have a Racing Beat aluminum by-pass block lying around my shop.

I have just got one of the sandwhich plates and the oil filter clashes with the TPS plug and the screw for the cold start dashpot. Anyone know a smaller M20x1.5 oil filter with the same diameter as the RX7 one? Model number and/or what car it is from?
Thanks

What is the thickness of the sandwich plate you are using? What oil filter?

I've used the prosport and glowshit sandwhich plates before, and I'm not a fan. Both started to leak oil after some time. Around the same time, I came a cross Goodfella's about how countless FDs come into the shop with an oil leak, which turns out to come from the sandwhich plate.

I would suggest finding a different way to solve the problem.

Like any other component in the oil system, it needs to be installed properly. If you do that it won't leak. Nobody says take the oil coolers off when they leak, you just install them correctly with proper seals and torque on the fittings.

For a temp sender, Corksport makes a pre-drilled banjo

That's what I got just earlier this week. You can also get NPT tee fitting if you want to expand to also monitor pressure and temp.

I have a Respeed pedestal, but I like that banjo bolt solution, might sell the pedestal and go with that.

Z79x filter. 3cm thick plate. Might have to look at a motorbike filter or something. Size is not so much a concern to me as it is not a daily and oil will be changed on a time not km basis. Gas price here is your equivalent of 8$ US per gallon. From photos a renault clio 1.5 diesel filter looks short and m20x1.5 and 76mm wide so might see if I can find one of them. Any other filter ideas?
I am also going to have to grind some off the bottom of the m20x1.5 thread extender as is bottoming on the original pedestal before being tight on the sandwhich plate.

Banjo fitting ends all arguments. Definitely easier than oil pedestal and expandable to fit your needs.

Would require a double tee setup to run oil press and oil temp. Also I have the sandwhich plate already so am going to try make it work but as noted I will have to grind some off the thread extender thing.

I think I will go for the Z436 which the Ryco website says is factory. The book in the shop said Z79X was factory.
Probably a minor difference I have stumbled on upon as a change from series 6 to series 7, as mine is a 1996.
Other options are a Z608 or Z445, Renault Clio filters. The Z608 is only 51.5mm high so that will be my last resort.
These all use M20x1.5 thread with 6H.

See excel sheet attachment.

I ground the thread extender thing 1mm down and now it screws the sandwhich plate home for a proper seal. The Z436 filter fits perfectly. Without grinding down the bolt (the thread extender) clearly it would not seal onto the factory pedestal and leak. I suspect people may have done this before and given them a bad rep.
Now I have the worst part to do which is getting the main centre console off (fan/AC switch plastic bit) as the gearstick surround bit is easy and to get the main switch panel off it looks like the steering wheel surround / main gauge panels needs to come off too.
But yes, that piece you have there looks nice. Parts are limited here unless I want to pay usually more than the cost of the part in shipping from the US. It doesn't look like something I could just simply pick off the shelf at my local hose/fittings shop.
