Exclamation is it legal???

hi i live in salt lake city utah, im in a little predicament. I just recently bought a bitchin 93 rx7 with a t-78 single turbo stand alone fuel system hks ignition 6 puck clutch dual exhaust with greddy N1 mufflers blah blah its got all the goodies it dyno'd at 425 horse at only 10 pounds of boost, silencers in the exhaust and on 92 octane. the car is tuned for 16 pounds of boost and is also tuned quite rich. i cant get the thing to pass emissions. it does NOT have a cat on it i knew a guy but he couldnt help me out so now i need to get it to pass. i was wondering if i threw a stock rx7 cat on it that i could unbolt and straight pipe it after im done. would that be enough? its got 800 and 1200 injectors so would a cat be enough? the emissions number here is about 165 im around 630 which is quite a big jump. so if a cat wouldnt do enough then im not going to bother and wait until i can find someone or just say i live in a county that doesnt require emissions. anyway any help would be very much appreciated. also if anyone lives in the salt lake area and has a rx7 that will pass emissions i will throw down some money to run your car

thanks
chris

Geee I thought everyone in Salt Lake City was straight as an arrow!

Yeah the cat will make THAT big a difference. Your car will even be more liveable because the exhaust will be quieter.

Just look around for a used stocker or free-flow.

i heard once that the last thing you want to do if you want an accurate emissions readout is spill some rubbing alcohol into your fuel tank.

Not sure what effect it would have on your engine either.

And yes, astock RX7 cat should fit...

You'll need to swap in the stock cat for the midpipe, and rig up an electric airpump (folks usually use a GM unit) since the T78 won't allow refitting of the factory airpump. You'll probably need to activate the 02 sensopr as well, no idea how that works w/ your aftermarket engine management. You can remove the stuff after if you want.

It should pass the sniffer test with that if it isn't too piggy rich at idle.... no idea how strict the visual inspection is in your area.

Just take your midpipe in and have someone weld a cat to it. That's what I'm currently getting done. Gonna have a high flow cat on their.

Buy a stock cat from someone bolt it in pass then take that back out again. I have a RV muffiler to help me get out of fix it tickets. 800 and 1200cc injectors seem small or am i wrong?

If you have lowering springs, lower them super low, they arent aloud to dyno your car if its too low. I didnt have lowering springs, so I drained my tire pressure to 7psi, all they could do is rev my engine.

I did the rubbing alcohol thing too, make sure you dont put too much in, it ***** up your car(I did it on my 1992 jeep wrangler).

I also dont know about throwing a stock cat on your car, I know if you go untuned straight pipes it'll blow your engine or somthin. Personally I wouldnt try it!

Just get your car lowered like a sonofabitch! That worked in MD, I dont know about SLC.

What the **** are you talking about? Put down that bottle of glue for a sec...

Why the **** would lowering your car have anything to do with a sniffer test? What the **** are you talking about a dyno for? And lastly if anything, putting a stock cat on the car, it will only make the car safer as far as detonation.

Damn, some people on this forum...Make sure you get your info from a reputable source!!!

In some areas the smog test requires that the car be put on a dyno and run at speed to check emissions. Mostly I think in California.

Weird, in Wa they dont make you do any of that bullshit. We just have to rev it up a little and the do the sniffer.

Seems like if you lower your car too low to pull up on the rollers they would just give you a ticket for not haveing your bumper at the leagal height...

I live in MD and my car is a stock R1. They only ran the idle test because they felt the car was too low to the ground to run on the dyno. Broke my heart.

But yea, you'll likely need a cat and an air pump to pass.

If its a roller test the easiest way out of the roller part is to knock one tire way down and leave the other fully inflated, the car will walk straight to one side of the rollers and they'll pull it off. But even on a rev test you'll probably need a cat to pass, and you really need one with an air tube and an electric airpump, without the airpump any cat will almost surely die behind a rotary due to stupid rich fuel mixtures and high EGTs. I "moved" to get out of my emissions testing as I removed EVERY emissions component on the car, and have no intent of restoring any of them... Here in Ohio they'll let you register a car to any valid address even when your license and other cars are all registered elsewhere, its as easy as walking into the DMV and getting a plate...
