Left car ideling for 9hrs....

I need help, I let my g/f drive my car last night, and she had her hands full when she was getting out of the car, and left the car running...I can't get too mad at her, because a.) i did let her drive it, b.) she is used to it running after she leaves it

I don't see that it would really hurt anything other than my gas supply, i checked the oil when I found the car still running, and it wasn't on the dipstick, but it didn't take a lot at all to get it back up above the E, I was curious because I didn't get a low oil light and my coolant was at a steady 190F, my heater was on full blast

just want your opinions, don't worry- she's banned from driving the car ever again

I left my first one running all night once. I came home drunk and forgot to take the keys out of the ignition. I came out to my car around 10:00 the next moringing and it was still running LOL
I ended up having to replace the coolant level sensor and that was all.
Of coarse I totaled it about 3 months later so I could say if there was any long term damage to the orings but I doubt that there was.

Your car should be just fine. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

As long as your fan mechanism is not broken and the fans come on, I wouldn't worry about it - the car is designed to idle as long as there is gas in the tank.

If the fans are broken then you would overheat the car.

If you let your car idle long enough the spark plugs will foul out. I would atleast replace them or check them out.

As r-magic said, check the spark plugs. If your car is like most of us, it's probally a tad rich during idle. Check the plugs, clean them, see if there is a lot of carbon.

I'd do a few hard runs to redline to help clear out some of that carbon that HAS built up in there, excessive idleing is never going to be helpfull in keeping an engine clean of carbon deposites.

i let mine idle for a few hours once cause i stopped at a friends and lost track of time. when i came out the coolant light was on, it was the first time i had ever seen it on, and has always been giving me trouble since. do you think the sensor might need replacing? thanks - steve

That's what I'm thinking. How could you just let it idle like that and have the car still be there?? I guess it's a different town outside of LA.

Driving drunk is fun. You **** and don't care. It just sucks when you wake up the next morning not remembering where you parked and where those broken taillights/holes in bumpers/scratches came from. Or so i've hear not that i ever done it. I'm drunk.

I left my daily driver idling in the parking lot for 10 hours at work one time.

I think you should change your oil.

It amazes me that something like this would happen. Moreover, it's pretty rare that such idle didn't overheat your car. My car gets hot just sitting there for 5 min. Don't let that happen again...
