Leaking Metering Oil Pump

I noticed a small leak from the small square panel on the MOP. The panel has 4 phillip-head screws securing it to the body of the pump. Anyone know what's behind this small panel? Before I go remove it, I would like to know if anyone had this problem and if the panel can be removed.

There is a an o-ring behind it that more than likely is old and worn out. Call Ray Crowe and order a new one, I don't remember it being that expensive. Check the factory service manual for the correct torque settings when you bolt it back on.

Where in the FSM are the specs located?

I don't think Mazda sells this particular o-ring. I just looked at the mazdaspeed diagram and they only show the OMP to front cover o-ring.

Perhaps mgoddard is misundertanding you.

The torque spec for the OMP to front cover is 70-90 inch*lbs

I just hand tightened the side place screws with a #1 phillips screwdriver. There is no torque spec for the OMP plates because they don't expect you to service it.

There is an o-ring sealing this panel. There is some kind of spring loaded contraption behind it, but it stays in place if you remove the panel slowly.

I just re-sealed mine after finding the proper o-ring size. I've got 49 of them left in SAE spec Viton if you'd like one. I'll send it to you along with a new Viton OMP to front cover o-ring for $6 shipped.

The only catch with the replacement plate o-ring is you'll need a high tack non-hardening sealant like hylomar to hold it in place while you put the plate back on. It will pop out of the groove before you can assemble it otherwise.

The OMP to front cover o-ring fits exactly like the original and stays in place easily.

Thanks. I have a kit that has nearly every size O-ring made so if it's just a round one, I should have it.

You're right, I was thinking of the whole OMP, not the square front cover you're referring to.

Yeah, but they're not Viton are they?

****, I guess they'll make anyone a mod now...

j/k hehe

I'm not familiar with kalrez. My bet is that FEP encapsulated Viton whips it's nancy ***.

I, for one, like the idea of an o-ring that will still be working even as my old, withered body is put into the ground.

I might be dead, but I'll be fucked if my OMP is leaking.

LOL. I've been a 3rd gen mod for 3 years or so.

www.dupontelastomers.com

We sell Kalrez from time to time and each o-ring can cost hundreds of dollars. Even a little one like the OMP ring might approach $100.

Oh, well I only heed to mods that have S/N's with bold lettering.

Wow, that sounds crazy and makes me want one... let's look it up.

Holy crap, it's $60 for ONE. Your o-rings win.

Removed the panel and found an odd shaped O-ring. It's diamond shaped and rather flat. Could be because it's been compressed behind the panel. I do not have an O-ring that will fit so I was wondering if I could just use a little "The Right Stuff" to fill in the grove and seal the panel.

It has taken a compression set, so that's why it's flat.

Just because it's a diamond shaped shaped slot doesn't mean you can't use a round o-ring. The ones I have are round and work well. Same with the S4 OMP end plates I've done.

As far as sealing it with gasket maker... I wouldn't risk getting extra sealant extruded and lodged in my oil injector holes and blocking lubrication.
