Question later model or Austrailian or JDM stock airbox?

Okay.....I spent the last hour searching for info on these airboxes. Of course you know how searching goes....you find three dozen other interesting topics to go investigate!....but I can't find anything except one mention of an Austrailian SP airbox in a link that had a MAZDASPEED carbon fiber intake box ($1155...!) but the link to the Austrailian airbox was dead.
Seems like the last time we discussed this in detail was back in the "pre-hack" days so maybe that is why I can't find anything(?)
What I remember about this is that Mazda developed it to avoid air-reversion thru the I/C.
Is this box available? Would it work on U.S. spec cars?

Thanks for any info.

I'm sure you can get it but you need the '99 front bumper or another '99+ spec bumper for it to work. The newer intake uses the hole in the license plate holder to get air. The newer Feed bumpers also have this hole so you could use that one as well. Maybe Chuck or someone else who can import parts can get it for you, it was stock on all '99+ cars.

There are 3 different things.

1) 99spec airbox
2) Mazdaspeed CF airbox
3) SP (Australian Bathurst special edition FD) CF airbox

I believe all three are still available, although #3 is made to order.

The one I am thinking of is NOT carbon fiber, it is just blow-molded plastic. So I guess I am thinking of the '99 spec box.
I'd like to see some pics if anyone has them.

there are 2 factory variations

96-98: N3F1, it still draws air from the ic, but the cross over duct is different, and the duct from the bumper to the ic is different. basically the hole is bigger

99-03: N3G1, this is the 99 spec stuff blah blah.

one thing to note is that the actual air filter box is the same, its just the ducting that changes. and a good plan B is to cut the bottom of the stock air box out and run a baffle like the m2 airbox, between the radiator and frame rail.

Yeah, I have my stock box modded to draw air in right by the frame rail in addition to the 'normal' intake. I just wanted to see how this (evidently '96 - '98 version) was different.

Thanks for the info!

Wow! Now I LIKE that! Kind of an "enhanced stock" look.
Where the hell are the filter(s) at for that beast?
Where can one purchase this?
How much?

It's similar to the old RE Amemiya foam air intake. It's a big circular base where all the stock hoses attach with a large cone filter on the front. This version adds a nifty duct to it as well.

Any fitment issues, specifically with the stock hood and support rod? I noticed what looks to be a molded valley allowing placement of the rod, but no stock rod seat. Still, I really like that.

EDIT: I just found a site. Not many pictures, but if that's the "ram air intake"...$950. LOL. It's not that nice.

Australian SP

the RX7-SP air box was made to fit the SP intercooler and the small battery with the SP battery tray. The fuse holder had spacers to lift it to make room for the intake duct to the front spoiler.

Knightsports also makes some neat enhanced airbox type intakes -

Can't find bigger pictures, unfortunately. Here's a link to their English parts page -

in one of the photos of the RX7-SP air box you can also see a bit of the carbon fibre battery tray and in both the carbon fibre intercooler duct, see the air box is fitted around the SP intercooler.

PS: Carbon man is the actual guy who made all the carbon fiber parts he's talking about for the SP aka Bathurst FD, in case you guys don't know Contracted by Mazda!
