The event is around June 4th(I think). I'm currently trying to think of a way to wire up the traction control in the AEM so I can take advantage of it in the drag strip (not sure if I have time to do that). I may even try to make a dual outlet midpipe so that the car can pass emissions.

We're thinking of a tires to use. (either use my CCW 18x10 wheels or the Fikse (17x9 and 17x10). What tires do any of you think is best for this event? Hoosier is banned and there isn't much options for 18x10 in competition tires.....

I think everything will work out pretty well other than the burnout/horsepower competition since stickier tires will create wheel hop and I don't want to break anything in this car early in the event.

I estimated that I can probably get around 26mpg for the fuel economy test and 550rwhp without the aid of N2O in this car.

Use the Kumho tires and the 17s might give you a better drag number ..... thinking about sidewall here. I personally think is harder to drag a car on thinner tires, however, I think you can similar on road course with either 17s or 18s.

 

What is the logic of banning tires from a specific manufacturer? What if Hoosier made a subsidiary company called Housier or something and made tires or is it actually something they do different in their tires that bans them? If it is just prejudice since they do a great job of making tires within the rules thats pathetic.

Are Kumho banned as well?

 

Here are some suggestions that might help out on some areas:

- Install a cat. Without a cat, you are going to get killed on the emissions test. 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords magazine (pg 125, June 2004 issue) just did a test between the Bassani all-metal cats, some known-high-flowing Bassani ceramic element cats, and straight pipes. Oddly, the metal cat made more power in the midrange compared to the ceramic cat, lost a little power down low, and was nearly the same at high RPM. The straight pipes made more power all over, but never had more than a 9.5 HP advantage from 3500 to 6800 RPM on a 97 Cobra with a peak power of 585-595 WHP. They were using two cats, but it might be worth testing one out on the car that will be used for the competition to see if it would flow enough. It might be worth losing 10-20 HP if you can clean up the exhaust significantly. I think you can pick up those metal cats for $100-150 each.

- Swap a stock seat into the passenger position. You'll probably lose a few show points, but I would expect you to more than make up for it in the granny test. Granny isn't going to like racing seats.

Of course, if you really just want to post excellent scores on the performance tests and say to hell with the rest, I wouldn't bother with these changes. You pretty much can't win overall that way, though.

Hoosier, Kumho, Michelin, Yokohama, and Pirelli all make competition tires in 285/30-18. Something like BFG g-Force KDs might be a viable alternative. I think the short sidewall is going to hurt a lot on the drag launch, though -- you might try running 285/35-18 in the rear or go with the 17s. Only Pirelli makes competition tires in 285/35-18, though, and they are $409 each from Tire Rack (ouch!).

Maybe you can start a Paypal donation drive to help cover some of these expenses. I would donate, and I bet others would, too. We all want to see the RX-7 kick some *** in this competition.

i say run the 17in wheels because the ride will be a bit more smoother and you will gain points in the granny section.

If you need a DOT legal tire I don't think you can get better than the Michelin Pilot Sport Competition Cups (although I have never broken the bank to get them)

 

And depending on alignment/tire choice, I would recommend perhaps dropping the rear spring rates on those HKS coilovers (65mm ID spring). Ive done that with mine.

 

For tire choice go straight to your local auto-X and ask what is dominating right now. Year to year different tires become the best. R-compound wise everyone was running Falken Azenis a little while ago, now Victoracers seem to be on top. Also, when you do get the tires be sure to have them shaved and heatcycled to get optimum performance out of them for the duration of the competition.

Also make sure any 5-point harness/rollbar/and hardcore safety equipment you have in there is fastened in properly. They have docked people on bolting harnesses to the floor and risking spine compression.

Uhh Azenis are not R-compounds, they are street tires.

 

i belive the green mostly stock supra in the last USCC used this tire and had good success.

Remeber on the dyno that the peak number isn't the only thing they count, power delivery is scored too.

and yeah, gotta do the emissions. i remember ol' wael el-dasher (sp?) talking about running both a cat and a midpipe with a switcher...ioughno.

good luck though! about time they let an FD in. hope its not like that car and driver challenge that peter farrell ran in where he spanked them all on the road course and still got 2nd. guess it was that rad hose that busted that did it. tighten those down

I'd probably say Kumho Victoracers or the Toyo RA1 tires. Most people kick serious *** on the Victoracers. The Toyos are used in Touring Car pretty successfully.

 

Placeing 1st &/or 2nd in atleast half (6) the events is almost a must to win.

Lets say it can do very well in these groups:
Skidpad
Road Course
Acceleration
Braking
Gross Display or Power
Guru Panel

It would need to atleast work on doing well on these:
Emissions (Like Steve mentioned, he's working on it)
Grandma (Hopefully they can quiet that beast down.)
Driveability
Fuel Economy
Dyno (500HP FD does well on the drag but hard to compete with 800rwhp+ Vipers and Supras)
