Keyless Entry/ move Passenger actuator to driver side????
Keyless Entry/ move Passenger actuator to driver side????
Anyone look into using the passenger door lock actuator/linkage on the driver side. I haven't seen the inside of the door as yet and don't know the style used in a FD. Surely hoping its a symmetrical design or a good match. John St. John
I've thought the same thing - the OEM actuator is likely better fit/quality than an aftermarket actuator. I've also thought it might be possible to get the door lock actuator from Japan, since it's on our driver's side door - the fit might be better.

Now that's an idea in the making.

maybe this is an option? slow and expensive, but definitely oem.

I was just thinking of fit and quality. I would like to install/move the factory one on the driver door and the aftermarket one on the passenger door. Thanks for the responses.
I had a contact in the UK. I bought a passenger side door lock and had to do alittle modifacation to make it work on my drivers side door. At least it won't damage any of the linkage as it was designed for the car. Jack
Why is an actuator needed, one isnt used on BOTH doors? I always presumed they both had them given the locking system when locking one door.
I would think an actuator from a Japanese RX-7 passenger door would work as well... although for 10$ I'd just get an aftermarket that, if installed properly wont damage anything.

Doing it is simple, all you need is the mentioned-above-many-times universal actuator. When I bought my car I took the one that had been installed in my driver's door OFF because I didn't like the way the aftermarket alarm locked the door after the vehicle was started....I got locked out of my own running car more than once...it SUCKED!
It really is a very, very simple thing to do, and once you have your door panel off you will see how it all works. And for the record, the aftermarket unit I have looks damned near identical to the OEM unit, I wouldn't be surprised to find that they are made by the same company. Let's face it...MAZDA doesn't build these units themselves, after all!

The actuator isn't the big trick, it's the linkage attaching it to the door lock itself. MANY people have reported problems and broken parts from using an aftermarket lock actuator, since the mounting is rather tricky.
I've found it's always better to use an OEM or near-OEM solution. I like keeping EVERYTHING in the car clean, sleek, and OEM quality, just the way Mazda would have done it. An actuator held in place with self-tapping screws and plumber's tape isn't clean or OEM quality.
But, I'm not saying that an aftermarket actuator can't be installed well and work well. I just like to challenge myself to go the next step and go for a VERY clean and slick install, even if it takes a lot longer to accomplish or costs more.
I'm interested by the remote lock setup JT Imports has, but that's a lot of money to spend on something untested.

Well the thing to remember about the setup from JT-Imports is that it is an OEM system. I've been considering it for some time but I cant justify it just yet considering it offers no extra security benifits like an aftermarket system would.

My only concern with the JT Imports setup is there's no guarantee that it will totally and easily work on a US car. I don't wanna drop that kind of coin to guinea-pig the setup, either
. Not to mention that keyless entry is cool, but I don't know if it's worth THAT much to me. $500 is gettin' pretty steep!
