You get what you pay for !!!!

I dissagree some what....in most cases you get what you pay for but in allot of cases you get what you deserve....generaly if its a steal (too good to be trure) you tend to overlook things that turn out to make it exactly what you bought for the price. I now own two 94 touring FD's for the price of what some have paid for one. I purchased one for $8300 with a coolant leake problem have had no problems untill recently (when I changed out the cooling system) but I'm sure it can be gotten around without a rebuild. The other I bought for $11000 bone stock and have had to replace the sunroof seal to make it complete. So I'm hoping the young guy's keep on tearing them up so mine will be worth more....I'd rather see them learn to drive them before they tear them up (or hurt themselves) but it happens. There are two CYM's here in Gainesville one with about 8X, XXX mile for sale in the $17 to 18k range and another one the guy is saving it (don't know for what) but it only has 17k miles on it.

Collectability?

This is a tough topic.....what % of FD's out there are actually kept STOCK and barely driven?

Obviously, this guy hardly ever drove it w/ only 19K miles. God that must take some serious will power. How on Gods earth can you have a car of this caliber in ur garage and barely drive it Ill never know. I think ppl who buy cars/bikes for that investment purpose are some silly a$$ folks. You want to invest? Go buy some funds!!!!!!! Cars like these SHOULD be driven......and driven hard!

Another $.02 opinion.

I bought my 93 red on black with 58,xxx in Sept of 99 for 14.5k. Three months later I lost an apex seal. Dealer charged me nearly 10 grand to repair it. 9k miles later, I lost another apex seal. I just won a court case getting back all my money from the dealer and I'm ready to start over now that I know 2 kick *** rotary guys. I really love that car and when I'm done with it I wouldn't take less than 25k for it either.

Dont get me wrong, I love the FD more than any other "comparable" car out there! but to expect to get tons of cash out of aging cars that are not exactly classics? I know theres a handful of them in the US and with the amount of kids buying and wrecking them it does kinda make it a hard car to find/see. I just dont see the collector potential an FD may have.
Of course youre just mildly suggesting a grand or two then ok I see it!

That's exactly what I was suggesting, I don't expect the FD to become worth what a HEMI Cuda, or a '53 Corvette is today, but let's face it, it's almost inevitable that the prices on FD's will go up at least a little as they become more and more rarer let's say ten years from now. At least I hope so. Do I know everything about car pricing?? No. I am just saying what I think. And this is more so on stock ones, or ones in great kept condition. At the rate people mod FD's, just about everyone has at least one mod, a new engine, or is planning on going single turbo, in ten years I think it will be hard to find a stock FD. And you never know there may be someone out there who wants one, just like this person found someone who wanted to pay 25k for one with 19k. Most people who would buy a car with 19k on it, are probably not going to use it as a daily driver I wouldn't think. And I would think that if they paid 25k that they might be able to get a warrenty on the car and afford to pay for it's up keep. But maybe I am assuming. I personally love to drive my car, but I know alot of FD owners, especially older mature guys that just keep it as a once in a while thing. Is a teenager going to keep the car at 19k?? No, but if it's say a 50 y/o doctor who just bought it as a new toy, then he might be only driving it a couple times a year and it may only get up to 30k over 4-5 years. How many FD's with 30k do you think you will find in 5 years? I say even less then there are now, and that's why I would think the price would go up. You never know what may happen in the next 5 years, someone might actually realize what great cars they are, and they might suddenly be in high demand. But that's just my own opinion, and don't flame me and ask me WTF I am talking about??

Good job on the sale. Low miles mean alot to me and I'm sure the car was worth every bit of $25k.

Yea i agree. Congradulations on ur sale. It was worth $25k. I don't understand why people think it's not. It's a 94, less than 20k miles, and its mint in every way!! How can u go wrong??? He should keep that car in his garage and sell that in the future and make a big profit

I bought mine for $16000 USD 1993 with 8000 miles 2 years ago. very glad I got it for so little.

But if I were going to sell I would sell what the market will accept. I have people offering me way more than I paid for it, and if that is what they will pay, then I would take their $$$.

I dont keep it for collectability...I've had two FD's..My first VR R1 I only put 12K miles on it in 4 years..got it as a dealerdemo ..totalled it with 19K on it. Got my second FD with new motor at 53K...now has 58K...that's only 5K in 2+ years of ownership... and Ive probably spent $10k + in mods easy.. Am I crazy maybe..but when I drive it ..I have lots of fun with it

Nuff said! The real problem is that most car owners (whatever make or model) don't really care to spend the TIME and a little scratch to learn about and maintain their mistress. And then they have no PRIDE in their ride, and it becomes an object of scorn. Oh yeah, then there's the other issue of learning how to take care of her in old age. (mine will be 10 this May, and I've been bonkin' her everyday since we fell in love that fine spring day.)
Gee, let's see, I just ran into the 3,000th guy today under 30 that wants to know when the "new" RX-7 that I'am driving became available and where can he get one? Sorry mate, this one is a keeper - at any price!
Oh, BTW, name ONE other Japanese car that has kept 50% - minimum - of it's orignal price that is ten years old! THERE ARE NONE, ZERO, ZILCH. That my friends is called VALUE. That is also known as collectible, period.

Why do people get their panties in a bunch when they see that an FD is priced even at Blue Book? I mean, if you really want the car, then pay for what it's worth. Supras go for a lot and people will pay the price cause it's rare, just like the FD.

Hypothetically, if you had two of the same exact FDs in condition, body, etc. would you pay less for the one completely stock, or one with an upgraded radiator, downpipe, and Aluminum AST? People will want to pay less for an upgraded car for some reason, even though it's more reliable. On the FD mods seem to be worthless to people.

Would you pay more for a car modded out by RE Amemiya or one sold by a guy who had it modded out by RE Amemiya? Neither come with a guarantee and neither is more reliable than the other.

Look at PFS' website. They sell FDs for high prices. If you can't afford to buy the rare FD, then move on and find another car, don't complain.

Haha!!!

I've got less than 9k miles on my 95 FD. Been offered a serious eye stunning $28k for mine two months ago, but it's not for sale. Life's too hard to come by w/ another one like it. On the other hand, if I was offerred mid $30k-ish. I might consider than.

Just my 2 cent worth.

Milage isn't everything. I have 92K on my 94. I saw a 94 with 30K that was a piece of garbage! I could not believe my ears when the guy said it only had 30K.. I was like, "what did you do to that poor car?"
I personally think the FD is going to appreciate barring some major economic collapse. They were and still are a great all around sports car with very classic looks.
As far as the collector value goes, people collect all kinds of stuff, including cars and nobody can really say for sure that this car will not be a collectable someday. When there are only a few left, and people still want them, the price will rise regaurdless of what most people think the car is worth.

This is a great thread! I've been involved in these a couple of times. It seems as though people now are starting to lean towards getting the value of the FD up. The only people who bitch about the prices of FD's are the people who can't afford them. If you had one that is rare you probably wouldn't be saying that it's not worth alot of money. I know that there all getting rare and yes I believe that the greatest sports car of all time is a collector. How could it not be??

Automax: 9k huh? That's pretty good! My 94 has 7,500 miles

My car was ordered brand new by a friend of mine back in 94 (I went with him). He raced it quite a few times blowing 2 motors in the process. He then got sponsored by Greddy with the T88 kit. At the time the only other kits were on Adam's and Frank Choi's car. He put the car together and blew the motor. We decided to build the motor....me and a friend drove it up to Adam S. place to have him build it (in 95). It sat there until 2 yrs. ago when it was moved to a shop in LA. I got the chance to buy it at the time so I did. Now it is being finished up finally and will be on the road within a few weeks. I have loved the car from day one and love it more now that I own it. I would never sell it for any price because it has way too many memories. I think that it's one of the lowest milage FD's in the country and maybe the lowest milage 94Silver R2 around. It's my baby and my life....I love her

Jonski,

you can download the 94 service manual for free at

www.iluvmyrx7.com

Otherwise it's about $60-$70 dollars for small print version, $110-$120 for large print version.

Get it. It's worth it, to learn how your car works, even if you won't work on it yourself.

classic?

I would hope in the future that an FD would be a true classic and i think this will happen. First, low production numbers. Second, demand. Sort of like the old theory in economics supply and demand. When the supply goes down the demand goes up and thats just what we are experiencing right now. I think also cars by any other auto manufacturers will have a role in this, for example can a car be built in the future for the same price delivering the same performance??? Probably not. Not in the price range these cars were sold at. I would just settle for the amount of repect that these cars have been getting as they get older and for all those people out there that talk there **** about how rotary motors arent reliable and that has to do with the people who never took care of them. Hey the greatest cars on the earth have there share of problems and for the amount of performance you get for your $$ just like FLYBYE said its a steal. There will probably never be a car built for that amount of money ever again. That includes the styling, and performance. So i leave you with this to think about how many cars do you know that can pull a .99g on the skid pad and cost under $50,000????

I'd just like to add how good it feels to roll up in your "new" FD when your buddies are spending TWICE as much on Civic SI's and Miatas and then refuse to admit what you paid for it. You should hear the guesses!

True, I know I'll be spending more on repairs and it has its quirks, but damn it's fast and looks good!!!!

I've got simple mods. But, it's too pretty and sweet to sale it. To me, it's worth more than $$$. It's rare to have one in good condition.
I used to own a '93 red FD and sold it after one year. That's why I went ahead and bought it again at the end of 95, when I heard that it was going to be discontinued here in the states.

Mods
17" BBS RK wheels
Pettit DP
RE Ameyl?..(can't spell) Air intake
RB Catback
RB springs
RB front spoiler, no stock altercation (can be removed for the stock look)
Power FC

Stock
Tires/rims only have 4k miles on them.(wrapped in huge plastic liners
and stored away. Could not part from them either.)
DP- cancer for the car. Gots to go
Intake - Too restrictive
Catback - gave it away to some rx7 recycling enthusiast
Springs - storage
FRT lip - chunked it
ECU- still got it

ps silvr94r2, Damn, them are some low *** miles.
