just replaced engine, running too rich at idle
I just replaced the engine in my car, and the engine runs so rich at idle, that it puffs out smoke, and literally burns your eyes from the unburnt fuel, could a vacuum leak cause this? I have not driven it yet so I dont know how it runs. Could a vacuum leak cause this? maybe a bad fuel injector? any ideas? I had the motor street ported and it has a downpipe. I heard that with a street port that you needed to either advance or retard the timing. could this be the cause?
hey man, don't know the answer to your question, but just wanted to say congrats on getting the car back running, hopefully it will stay this way for more then 5 minutes *crossing fingers*. Anyhow, congrats and next time I'm going to knoxville I'll shoot you an email and we'll check out FD's. Later

the guy who installed the engine seems to think that a vacuum line popped off somewhere, he said he could hear something sucking air. yes i have a stock ecu and a downpipe and street port.
My car does the same thing. It burns so rich my eyes hurt right away.
But my car has an exhaust leak between the manifold and the turbo. Theory is, the o2 sensor is reading the incoming air and then compensates for it. As soon as I change the gasket I'll let you know.
Hope this helps

if the air pump is not on, then the exhaust becomes saturated with unburnt fuel. Make sure your air pump is running because it helps the at clean up the unburnt fuel.....that's if you still have the main cat.
