just installed my Borla XR-1
I just cut and welded a Borla XR-1 muffler in my midpipe. The car is now noticably more quiet. I have the Greddy PE exhaust and the note at idle sounds like a cross between having a cat and no cat. It is deeper than straight through, but not as quiet and deep as with stock cat. The car doesn't sound near as burpy as it did with only the midpipe.
Oh the power side I didn't notice a drop in power with my seat dyno! I'll get in on a real dyno soon enough. I just thought I would share my discovery with everyone.

My car hasn't been emissions legal in a long time now. The people who would be interested in this are people who have a mp but want something a little more quiet or people that want to go mp, but don't want it to be that loud. I know lots of people, including myself, have heard over the last year that the Borla does a good job, but I have yet to personally hear of anyone doing it and to verify the results.

I have been a big fan of the XR-1 since I put mine on last summer. It really makes a big difference around town, keeps the cops away. But you still make huge noise at WOT.
I would have my neighbor (a cop) in a hissyfit, if I didn't quiet my car down somehow.
And like spyfish said, no change in power, but I don't have any dyno proof.

Or the states (which i bet i'll end up ordering from anyways!)?
Spyfish, theres a single and 3 chamber design right?
which one did you use?

The XR-1s don't have chambers. It is a straight through design.
I've been a big fan of Borla for a while, and so have some of my friends. A bit pricey for a muffler needing a custom install, but they have proven to be the BEST sounding mufflers.
I've never seen any dyno figure's on them, but I CAN tell you this..
On drag cars, the XR-1s have been known to only loose about 1-2hp when comparing the XR-1 to an open header while drastically changing the exhaust tone and volume, but on some cases, it's actually been known to outflow a straight pipe! Don't ask how this is possible cuz I have NO idea, but I CAN tell you is that I've never had someone complain about a Borla.

Thanks for the replies
I'm assuming you ordered the 3" id in/out one right?
what was the exact model #?
i'll probably order from summit too.
hmm...i wonder how quiet my car would be with two of them!
haha

I already had a midpipe so no big deal. If you can find a muffler shop that will do this sort of work then just buy the Borla and pay them to do it. Many places won't because it is replacing the stock cat.

There are a number of mufflers in the XR-1 line. The "Race" muffler has three smaller perforated (holes, not stamped perfs) tubes in the muffler section and is said by Borla to be the quietest of the line (but also the most expensive at ~$240 for a 16" 3" oval). I think Spyfish has the "Sportsman" which is straight-thru in the traditional sense. It is less expensive and louder, but probably flows a little better.
Nopi had a blowout sale recently, and I got a "Race" version for $170 shipped. However, they have since raised the price.

Astro: I got mine from Summit Racing. They were nice enough to send it USPS to save the cost of the brokerage fee from UPS.
It cost $128 USD. I got my midpipe last year custom made by my local favorite muffler shop for $80 CAD, and they welded the XR1 in for $25 cash. Much cheaper than a resonated midpipe.
I got an oval one, 3 inch inlet/outlet, 16 inch length.

I have the 16" oval sportsman. It uses the 2 sheets of the perferated metal. It cost 128 before shipping ... most other places were more expensive.
