The wires pretty much have insulation all the way through. The ends are protected by rubber grummets.

Here are the light differences between the HID and regular halogen. The first picture is taken standing in between the cars. The second is staring at the cars.

The lights were purchased from a dealer in N.Y. for $ 350.00. It was a hook up, one time deal.

The HID bulbs are very similar in size to that of the halogen bulbs. It is slightly thinner and longer. Being similar in size means the physical location of the light source doesn't change. The majority of the light is actually from the parabolic reflectors in the housing. The glass lens is used to distribute the light for proper illumination.
In general, light sources always scatters in all direction (unless it is a laser beam), that is why there are parabolic reflectors in headlights and flashlights etc. to redirect the light.
