The prep looks great, thats cool that they are using actual metal on the holes.. many would just use fiberglass and filler. Great thing to know the body guy well before having the work done.

JimLab, that paint looks nice, that is basically what I intend to do. It is still very far away though; my car was already repainted by the previous owner and it is deacent enough to keep me happy. My goal right now is getting a home with a garage to store my baby. I'm starting to rethink the color... I.B.M. is a great color but it is getting common... I'm not sure if I should pursue a candy red color or maybe a titanium gray color.

Damn, this thread is pretty fun to read. Oh, guess what I did today at work....I made paint. Two batches of 50 gallons, one color called cinnebark and another called brick red. And the chemists I work for that have been making paint for 30+ years would beg to differ on the paying for a name thing. Just because Cadillac is owned by GM as is Saturn, they are not equivalent. ok, i have uploaded more pis onto the website... i was at the shop until 9 at night and i rolled all the fenders today because when i get bigger rims in the back, i dont want to roll them then use a heatgun to heat the paint so it doesnt crack... i just did it now without the heat gun and cracked away

today, they finished the bondo and sanding of the dents... they started to spray the primer to the bonbo'ed parts and thats were we called it quits...

tell them to cover your exhaust...otherwise you'll get some overspray on it.

yes i know.... if you read what i wrote on top of pics on my website, you will find out that i told them not to waste their time covering it... im replacing it and its plugged for dust not to go in anyway.... i have a new one waiting to get installed the day it comes out of paint....

If they paint it with the front or rear bumper on the car your $$ spent on quality paint is down the drain...

The paint will form a "fillet" between the body and the bumper which will make a place where the paint will crack and peel over time. There is no way to prep the edges properly to prevent the cracking/peeling unless you remove the bumper. Considering the level of teardown the car is at removing the rear bumper is cake.

 

yes, we are taking off the rear bumper and front one... im putting a 99 spec front bumper which is on its way. thats why i leave it on there because i dont want the bust from sanding going onto the engine. thats why i still left the hood and windows on there... he said when were done with the messy work on the outside, then we will take all the stuff off and do the inside... we will take everything that is removeable off as best we can... keep in mind i will have only about 5 day's to put everything back together in time for sevenstock...

 

their primer is the best i've ever seen. We used ultra 7000 system but a **** diablo owner bought enought materials to paint a whole car for a 2x2 inch repair. Got to keep the exta for side jobs, great stuff.

But on a more serious note, my father has a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette. It started life as a white w/white coves and red interior. We picked it up back in 1993 in CT with 15,000 original miles with "true" matching numbers, not a set of factory purchased numbers.

Anyways, the car obviously spent all its life sitting and the exterior needed extensive work. We brought it to a local body shop in upstate NY that was specifically known for its restoration of classic, antique and custom vehicles. They did a frame-on restoration, pulled off all the chrome and either had it re-dipped or replaced with factory parts (hard to find!). The car was then sprayed a bright red with white coves and red interior. The factory hard top was painted the same color. The body shop used Spies Hecker paint. When i asked them why they used it, they said that it was a better paint than the usual Dupont, etc. They said if we plan to show the car (which we did) and if the car would spend a considerable amount of time sitting in the sun at car shows, that this paint's durability and resistance to UV and other harmful conditions was bar-none. After showing the car for 8 years in the pounding sun every summer the paint looks just as good as it did when it was painted. This includes the 1 inch layer of dust the car endures in the fall to spring season(when dust/dirt particles have a LONG time to embed themselves into the paint) where the car sits in a dusty garage where my father never bothers to wash the dust off the car. He just pulls it out in the spring and washes all the dust off and it's beautiful.

For the exuast, get somthing I used in military school. Its called NEVERDULL, it comes in a silver alumnium can. It will probably be your new best friend when it comes to cleaning anything. Just dont use it on your paint. If you've never been introduced to it, go find some and use it on your rims/exuast/shoe marks or anything on leather, you will be pleased.

guys dont we just want our cars to go fast. and i am in the navy we use neverdull on all the brass on the ship, it works really good.

 

wait, isnt that the same as the mothers billet aluminium cleaner??? well if not, i will look for that stuff... also, i have a new exhaust waiting to go on it so im not even going to waste time trying to clean that off!!

also, how do we remove the vent in the fender??? is there a trick to it that i dont know??? i tired to pull it off but i dont want to break it... any help???

the whole vent comes out by removing 2(?) screws on the inside of the fender. There is the black mesh in there that comes out with a little force. There are melted tabs that hold it in place. They break off pretty easily and will stick back on with some epoxy.

yea, it fitts really good actually! the only problem i had was to get the screws through the holes on the hinges... we had to drill one out!

 

Yeah, VIS makes some nice hoods. I got the KS style and it fits perfect. Only problem (still don't know if it's the hood or fenders) is that the gap on the passenger's side is wider than the driver's side. Other than that, it's perfect. The weaves are very nice as well, not a single blemish
