Unhappy JDM 3rd gen with Stock Single!?

Hey guys, I have a bit of a situation here and need to know whether or not this is true, or if my mechanic has lost his mind

I recently imported a JDM 1992 FD from japan. I've been driving the car for a few weeks now and for some reason the car just felt slower than I had expected. So I take it into my mechanic, the same one who did the DOT conversion work for British Columbia standards.

Now I just got a call from him this morning diagnosing the problem as "a blown turbo", as I suspected. He asked if I wanted to get another stock turbo, or upgrade it. I asked if he meant as in converting to single turbo? Then he tells me:

Mechanic: " This car is already single turbo."
Me: " What!? Im pretty sure every 3rd gen RX7 comes stock Twin Turbo."
Mechanic: "Nope, JDM 3rd gens usually come stock with Single turbo. It's pretty rare that you'll find a twin turbo FD"

Now, I know my mechanic and like to think I can trust him, but after telling me this, I started to wonder if he really knows what he's talking about.

So call me crazy, but did they EVER make FD's with a Single Turbo setup???

Definitely don't trust what he tells you. You probably have a boost issue, which does not mean that your turbos are "blown". Diagnose the problem yourself or take it to a rotary specific shop. Get a boost gauge hooked up.

Lol, omg that's hilarious. Nobody has said it flat out yet, so I will. Every 3rd gen. RX-7 EVER MADE came twin turbocharged. There is absolutely NO 3rd gens that came with a single turbo. He may be getting confused with Supra's. MKIV Supra's came TT, but the older US MKIII's all came with a single turbocharger. The Japanese MKIII Supra's came TT, but they had the 1g-gte instead of the USDM 7M engine, so yeah, most US MKIII Supras are single.

^That's a possibility, but that doesn't make him competent.

Hah! Thanks guys, thats what I tried to tell him. It just seemed so ridiculous to me that a mechanic who specializes in JDM cars wouldn't know that.

It definately is a boost issue though, hooked up a temp boost gauge and its getting about 5 psi

How can you buy a car, an imported FD for that matter, and never even look under the hood? I mean come on, a single turbo installed just might be obvious.
