Japanese spec > U.S. spec

I have a 1992 3rd gen that I bought when I was stationed in Japan. I brought it here to Italy and just paid $4k for a rebuilt engine (shipping kills). After I leave here in a couple years I would like to take it back to the states. Anyone know how much it costs to convert these? So far w/ the rebuilt engine and the $3.5k I paid for the car (yes, cheap cars in Japan) I have $7.5K invested. Is it worth it, or sell it here? I just love it so much and would hate to let her go.
Any information would be appreciated.
Mark

If your in the military it's not that hard to get through customs. at least it wasn't before. prolly get us spec headlights and maybe front glass. throw a cat in and be done. military is easier then commoners like us. getting it over here is alto cheaper too =-)

Yeah, I get a vehicle shipped for free when I move from base to base, but to pass U.S. inspections and getting it registered sounds pricey. I need to find out if I need to convert it here or is there someone in the U.S that does it after I ship it.

Should not be a whole lot to get it inspected and registered. if you know anything that is wrong with it now (it has no Cat whatever then i would get it replaced if you have time. i believe that once you import a vehicle and it needs work done you only have a set amount of time to get the work doen (i could possibly be wrong but i'm fairly sure).

I thought people stationed in other countries were allowed to bring back cars and register them?

Yes we can but i'm sure they must be able to meet U.S. standards. I've heard rumors of safety glass, side impact issues, emissions (yes, both cats are still installed).
