The increased Jspec horsepower isn't from the engine, its from better turbo's, intake, and exhaust.
This isn't a Honda so don't assume that everything from Japan is superior in build.

There are many differences in the internals from what I have heard, just much improved for dependability and quality. As far as Hp, the difference remains only with the ECU, turbos, and piping, not the core motor.
Latest model years have the best of all worlds (99+), but there are still 265Hp and 280Hp different motors, basically tuning and turbos differences.
Good Luck,
Tim

tolkyr i am from Cyprus and i own a 2000 Type R. if you need any info just PM me but the transportation costs are the same to import from Japan or US. The only difference is the price since in Japan the labour is way more expensive than the US one so you can buy a rebuild motor from US reputable builder the half price.
If you are talking "JDM" as the 99+ spec engines then yes there is a little difference on cooling, oil system and bearings as far as i know but you can buy 2-3 engines from US at the price of a 99 spec.

The engine specs are the same for the domestic & export variants with the exception of ECU programming.
Mazda made 3 versions of the FD series 13B engine, each with a power upgrade.
series-6 (92-95) = 255hp
series-7 (96-98) = 265hp
series-8 (99-02) = 280hp
Be aware that some parts may be slightly altered to suit the rhd format of the Japanese car

Does anybody know which series uses the following computer ECU?
N3F1-18-881A?
It is a used JSpec available to me. It appears to be a 96+ Series 6 or 7 motor I think, but just checking to make sure.
