Japan Models
Can someone explain to me the different japanese models or each sub-gen (93-95, 96-99, 99+). I have no clue how they relate to the US spec like the touring and the R1. thanks.

In 1998 the Type R and RS got engine output increases from refinements to the turbos, exhaust, lubrication, and cooling systems. The result was 280bhp at 6500 rpm and 231ft*lb at 5000 rpm. The 93-97 models had the 'same as US' spec 255 bhp and 217 lb*ft. In addition 1998 brought visual tweeks and suspension tweeks. A nardi steering wheel was added in 1998. Since then the output in other models have stayed at 280hp-231lb*ft. 1999 model has, in my eyes, become the most beautiful RX7. So in short, the base/touring/R1/R2 were basically identical to what the rest of the world got until 1998.

Our cars have pre-cats, theirs just have straight through downpipes. Also , in 96 they were rated at 265 hp over there when the efini y-pipe was released. I have no idea about the cooling or lubrication systems. The turbos sleeves were changed to a bit smaller so they had more clearance and generated less heat. Also there are suspension and brake differences as well. Adjustable rear spoiler, different bumper, sidemarker lights, rims blah blah blah. The body generally aside from the front bumper and spoiler are identical.

If these cars are still being made and still have the same equipment (for the most part) and are reliable in Japan. Why do they get such a bad rap here in the states?

They are not still being made in japan, the last rx7s were 2002s.
The rx7 was not discontinued in the US because of reliability issues. They just weren't selling as well here for a number of reasons from poor marketing to an over all decline in demand for sports cars in the mid-90s.

So how different are the 2002 7's in Japan from the 95's here? And can all the parts be purchased to upgrade the 95 FD's? Or did they only make right hand drive parts? And what about the engines, any breakthroughs there? Sorry for all the questions, I am an FD newbie.

Ok, care to expand on that?
I have been looking for performance numbers on these models for a couple years now with no luck. I'm very curious to see how the FD does with modern low profile tires.

Ever seen the Best Motoring 2000 RX7 video? They have an '00 RS get the better of a '97 RZ, both stock. They raced around a track in Japan and the RS (heavier) took the RZ by 2.5-3 seconds and was leaving it on the straights. The RZ was only comparable because of the stiffer suspension from the factory.
I'll sell copies of mine, PM me.

I think the links are dead but otherwise it compares just about every difference between the US and JDM spec.
(man who are those JDM guys? They've got parts everywhere!) j/k!

Just to point couple of things.. The front end is made to flow more air than older (99+ vs. 92-98)..
Also the RZ tranny has different 5th gear..
280 Hp versions have different turbo.. with some special seal.. Supposed to last longer or something.. but spools quicker but smaller turbines..
rear wing on 99+ are adjustable.. So on so on.. but pretty much most 7 owners cars are upgraded so it doesn't really matter.. i don;t think..
