I've got strange options, R1 or base? Pics inside...
Hey all just bought my first FD roller. It's got many signs of being an R1, no sunroof, no rear wiper, dual oil cooler, R1 wing and lip. However the interior has base seats. I attached a few pictures, it may look like a CYM and would be a no-brainer, but its actually a custom corvette yellow job. The carfax says "COUPE, 1.3L R FI / REAR WHEEL DRIVE". Would carfax specifically say R1 instead of coupe? Or does coupe refer to the body style and the "R" indicate R1? It's really not a big deal to me either way, I would just like to know.

I believe the R1's had a signifying letter in the VIN number. You can also call your local Mazda dealer with the VIN and they should be able to tell you.
There really isn't anything's the R1's had that could not be swapped to the a Base. The key to knowing the original equipment is in the VIN.
Good luck.

The "R" in the Carfax Report preceding "FI" most likely signifies that it's a "Rotary" Engine, Fuel Injected. But that is an "assumption" on my part.

Go here:
http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/disp...ersHome.action
Register your FD with the VIN. They'll give you some basic info about the car including the trim type (Base, Touring, R1/R2, PE).

Despite this topic being beaten to death already, you're missing a few things...
- No R model ever came w/ cruise. Too heavy
- Ditto w/ the Bose bass tube...too heavy
- The R1/R2 shocks are indeed different than the other models, so that will be a dead giveaway 99% of the time (I doubt anyone went as far as to change out the shocks).
- R models were only available in black, red, and yellow (in 93 only). If your FD was originally a different color (dealer info can tell you that) such as MB or white, then it's not an R model
- Also, all R models came w/ black cloth only, although many ppl have later on swapped seats for leather or base seats etc.

Does the car still have the original stickers in the door sills?
Here's the options sticker from my 1994 Base model:
The sticker on an R1 should list a Hard or Sport suspension as well as different seats, and maybe even a different Body Type of Model-Spec. If you can post a photo of that sticker, I'd appreciate it, especially if you've got an R1 (looks like you've got the early style gauges and interior plastic).

I know it's a subject that's been beaten to death, I just didn't know what to think with such a mismatch of parts. But good news... I've got a genuine R1! I signed up with mazdausa and it's telling me it's a true R1, thanks for all the input, I'll keep good care of it .

ah you live in MI eh? i'm just a bit east of you ...
'grats on the new car, I would have guessed R1 as well considering everything else adds up aside from the seats, which are commonly swapped out after getting the bolster worn down. So what was the original color?

thanks, yeah i was hoping that the seats were just a replacement. i'm in michigan right now, but am leaving for WA in 3 days to start up my new job... and that's where the car is as well. the original color was brilliant black... one of 600 or so produced that year .
