It's rebuild time!

Well, unfortunately, I am finally joining the club no one wants to me a member of -- the club of FD owners who have had to rebuild their engine.

I've been experiencing the normal symptoms -- poor fuel mileage, loss of low end power/throttle response, and hard hot starting. Had my compression check, here's the results:

rear rotor -- 6.2, 6.0, 6.2
front rotor -- 5.7, 5.9, 5.7

Car will be going under the knife in a couple of weeks and will likely be down for 3-4 weeks. Plans are for a streetported, 3mm seal engine with new rotor housings (at a minimum), ACT S/S clutch, aluminum flywheel, larger injectors/fuel pump, new fuel system components, all new cooling and vacuum hoses, swapping PFS intake for RX7fashion intake, RX7fashion hi-flow cat, possibly diff bushings, motor mounts, wiring harness, etc.

And new turbos -- still debating with myself over BNR Stage 3s or 99+.

Rick's Rotary Performance will be doing all the work...

Stay away from 3mm seals.

Rick built a great motor in my car with 3mm seals. The previous owner, Joe Ramos had him do the work and it's one of the better engines I've owned. It's currently blown I have 3.9 7.2 4.2 or so but it still runs strong. Starts hot and has good power until boost reaches about 11 then she starts having some trouble. I also had 3mm seals in Wael's old car which also was a great engine.

Be sure to have the engine balanced I think that makes a huge difference and I believe he's cabable of doing it for you.

Good luck,
Fritz

Ahh rynberg sorry to hear that. If you can get the car started pretty easy and you are replacing the housings/turbos any way why not just drive it like that until it doesn't go any more?

That's going to be one heck of a bill and from my experience the more you change out the more problems you'll have until it's all sorted. I'd leave alone what is ok for now.
Isnt that the same shop zerobanger went to?

Hey Rynberg. Sorry for the bad news, but I'm sure you'll be happy w/ the new mods Oh and given the recent changes, dynos, and feedback, I'd be going w/ the Stage III BNRs, in sequential. Good luck w/ everything...def keep us updated. Looks like I'm going to be joining the club in the near future... :-\

Don't feel bad, mine has been like that for nearly 2 years. The original engine and turbos @ 106K miles. I've probably put more miles on my engine since it has been blown than when it was running correctly (if it has ever run correctly). I plan to drive it till it quits. It still pulls strong and boosts good, just a rough idle and the secondary turbo dumps a lot of oil in the exhaust. Code name: smoke screen

Rick doesn't like putting 2mm seals back into used rotors. Rick pretty much builds all of his motors with 3mm seals and they all have great compression and run strong. I used to be a 2mm advocate myself but I haven't rebuilt hundreds of motors like Rick has, so I'm deferring...

Thanks Fritz!

SurgeMonster: Same shop as David (zerobanger). I don't really view it as several new mods at once as all of those items have to come out as part of the rebuild process anyway (or most of them). Good advice though.

Thanks Mahjik!

Thanks Rami, I responded.

My current mods are in my sig.

And yes, I could keep driving the car, probably for another 15-20k miles, heh. However, I'm becoming quite a track junkie and haven't been to the track for 6 months already. There's no way I'll take the car to the track in its current condition, therefore, rebuild time. That and I'm getting sick of getting <10 mpg.

This may sound strange but with the low compression engine it's probably safer to run on the track LOL

Well *I* don't feel sorry for you. It sounds like it's going to be a nice setup.

Good luck

How many miles do/did you have on your current setup?

No sense in worrying. My original motor made it to 98K and it was run hard constantly. You never know when it will be your time

Good luck with the work, rynberg.

I'm just a hair under 50k miles on my car....and everytime I drive it, I feel as if I'm pulling the pin on a old handgranade. You never know if its going to hold together, or let go. CJ

Depends on if you pull / re-install it yourself...

$800 Removal
$800 Re-Installation

$2000.00 Rebuild
$150-200 Porting

You'll be lucky to get out of most places with $4K
