an interesting conversation I had today with a top japanese FD tuner...
I've got my car booked in for a rad/ic/smb cat install and tuning, and...
me: I also need my boost controller re-installed, as it's not working
tuner: what are you using?
me: profec b II
tuner: but you've got a pfc haven't you?
me: yes...
tuner: well, you don't need the controller. The pfc will control the boost.
me: but, I don't have the controller add-on
tuner: you don't need it. If you had, for example, an mr2 - then you should buy the add-on kit. The FD doesn't actually need it.
me: really? but I also like the hi/lo capability of the profec.
tuner: you can do that through the commander - no problem
I found this highly interesting! Particularly as it comes from a well-respected tuner who is responsible for some of Japan's fastest street FDs (and he sells the profec b).
BTW, the workshop is stillway. Here's a couple of examples of their handiwork (please ignore the tool/host);

He's quoted me 340-350hp (limited by the factory pump) - so, if all goes well, that should keep me grinning for a while.

Sure, the PFC can control boost, and it's adjustable, but it relies on the stock pills and solenoids. So just like the stock ECU, it may have trouble stopping boost spikes.
If you notice spiking boost then you need to upgrade to a separate controller.

He's correct, you don't "need" it. However, it's commonly known that the stock pills/solenoid setup is a little slow with it's response (hence boost spikes). Switching to an aftermarket Electronic Boost Controller not only gives better coverage for boost spikes, but better turbo response do to the better wastegate management an EBC offers.
Typically, people going with a PFC are going for better performance all around. So, they will usually replace the stock boost control system with something "better".

When i was running stock turbos with the PFC i controlled my boost via the PFC. It worked very well. If you have a turbo back exhaust, i can see where you may have boost issues. If you are still running with a cat, you should be fine, just keep an eye on things. Hang on to the profec b though, just incase you see any boost spiking or creeping. At the first sign of this, i would have the boost controller put on for sure.
